Neil Armstrong was an American astronaut who was the first person to walk on the moon as commander of Apollo 11 in 1969. He was born in 1930 in Ohio and graduated from high school there before joining the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics in 1952. Armstrong then moved to NASA's Edwards Flight Center in California and later to Houston to begin astronaut training. On July 16, 1969, Armstrong, along with Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, launched aboard Apollo 11 on their mission to land on the moon.
