2. DEFINITION
Oral and Maxillofacial surgery(OMFS) is the
special branch of dentistry in which one
specializes in treating many pathologies, injuries
and defects of head,face,neck and jaws including
hard and soft tissues of oral and maxillofacial
region.
In 2nd World War,OMFS emerged as one of major
specialties.
3. TRAINING
In UK and most of Europe,both medical and dental degrees are compulsory
in order to pursue this specialized training.
In almost every other region like Pakistan, United States, Australia, Canada,
Newzealand as well as Scandinavia, OMS is recognized as speciality of
dentistry.
In Pakistan,achieving eligibility criteria to pursue 4 years training(FCPS OR
MDS) in OMFS requires 4 years of dental degree(BDS) from PMDC
recognized institute and one year of House Job.
In USA,four to six years of university training in oral and maxillofacial
surgery is required after four years of dental school(DDS).
4. Further Training
Depending upon the jurisdiction,an oral and maxillofacial surgeon may
require futher training in general surgery, general medicine and anesthesia.
An oral and maxillofacial surgeon may choose to undergo futher training in
following 1 to 2 years subspecialty Fellowship Training programs:
1. Cosmetic Facial Surgery
2. Craniomaxillofacial Trauma
3. Pediatric Maxillofacial Surgery/Cleft Surgery
4. Head and Neck Cancer/Microvascular Reconstruction
5. Maxillofacial Regeneration(regeneration of Facial region by Advanced stem
cell technique)
