History Of Operations Management
 During the second world war various researchers undertook studies to
understand the multiple processes that swayed the course of army
operations such as supply root, logistics, movement of troop etc.
 This immense focus on analyzing the pattern of military operations
resulted to the advancement of military systems and provided much
necessary insight into understanding multilateral and interdisciplinary
process that constitute the field of operations research.

What is Operations Management?
 Operations Management is managing the processes to effectively and
efficiently transform raw materials to tangible output.
 Due to the changes in industry, continuous advancement and increased
competition, there is a need to make the operations most effective and
efficient.
Definition: The business function responsible for planning, coordinating and
controlling the resources needed to produce products and services for a
company.
 Operations management deals with:

 Maintaining the quality of the products that’s are being produced.
Ensuring the meet the necessary standard as requested by the customer.
 Making sure that the right quantity of the products is delivered that is
asked by the customer.
 Delivery of the consignment on right time that has been decided while
taking the order.
 Ensuring that the prices are competitive.

 An operation manager should be a effective problem solver.
 He should not take decisions in heat of moment in case of a problem.
 There should be a systematic way while approaching to a problem.
 He should be a good listener which can help to understand the situations
and take the action.

Data Analysis
 Data is the new oil. Data analysis helps to transform the
data to extract meaningful information from it which
in decision making.
 It can help in forecasting. An operation manager must
have sound knowledge of reporting tools like Power Bi or
Tableau.
Decision Making
 In the business world, operation managers have to make
choices everyday without delay and having far reaching
consequences.
 These decisions should be rational and unbiased. One
learn how the industry professionals are taking the

 An operation manager should be able to influence and

Qualification needed for an Operations
Manager
 Road to become ana operation manager is a combination of education
and on-job experience.
 Most of the operations managers have completed a bachelor’s degree
and have 3-4 years of relevant experience.
 Bachelor’s degree in business administration or Engineering is preferred.
 M.B.A. is an added advantage.
One can get the theoretical knowledge through the degree or various
sources available but to learn from the practical experiences of the industry
