One technology the organization uses to train medical personnel, regardless of location, is the Smile Train Virtual Surgery Simulator.
Smile Train developed the simulator in partnership with BioDigital, a leading 3D platform, to equip surgeons with cleft lip and palate repair skills. The technology enables surgeons to explore a virtual cleft lip and palate in 3D, simulate the surgical procedures, and access descriptions at every step. Also, surgeons can access landmark case studies, expert advice, and surgical videos in real-time, as well as take quizzes and tests on cleft palate and the methods of surgical treatment.

Operation Smile is a non-profit organization founded in 1982 that provides cleft lip and cleft palate surgery to children globally. It focuses on serving communities with limited access to surgical care. The organization operates medical missions and care centers, conducts advocacy and training programs, and supports research. Its vision is for every child to have access to exceptional surgical care regardless of ability to pay. The Georgia Tech chapter of Operation Smile aims to spread awareness of cleft conditions, raise funds for surgeries, encourage student interest in craniofacial issues, and provide local and global service opportunities.

The Global Health Corps (GHC) has grown significantly in its first 5 years, expanding from 22 fellows in its first class to over 100 current fellows. GHC places fellows in year-long paid positions with high-impact health organizations to address issues like HIV/AIDS, maternal and child health, and chronic diseases. Through training programs, community building activities, and professional development opportunities, GHC equips fellows with the skills to be leaders in the global health field and make measurable impacts on health in communities around the world.

Relay for Life
The American Cancer Society is hosting a Relay for Life event at Cleveland State University in April 2013 to raise funds for cancer research and patient support services. The Cancer Killers PR group has created a campaign plan to increase awareness of the event among CSU students, faculty, and the local community in order to boost participation, attendance, donations, and the amount of money raised compared to the previous year's event. The campaign will utilize online communications, campus publications, and promotional materials placed around campus to promote the Relay for Life and encourage involvement. The success of the campaign will be evaluated by comparing the participation, donation, and attendance totals to the previous year's event.

Working with data is a challenge for many organizations. Nonprofits in particular may need to collect and analyze sensitive, incomplete, and/or biased historical data about people. In this talk, Dr. Cori Faklaris of UNC Charlotte provides an overview of current AI capabilities and weaknesses to consider when integrating current AI technologies into the data workflow. The talk is organized around three takeaways: (1) For better or sometimes worse, AI provides you with “infinite interns.” (2) Give people permission & guardrails to learn what works with these “interns” and what doesn’t. (3) Create a roadmap for adding in more AI to assist nonprofit work, along with strategies for bias mitigation.

Combined Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) Vessel List.
The best available, up-to-date information on all fishing and related vessels that appear on the illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing vessel lists published by Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs) and related organisations. The aim of the site is to improve the effectiveness of the original IUU lists as a tool for a wide variety of stakeholders to better understand and combat illegal fishing and broader fisheries crime.
To date, the following regional organisations maintain or share lists of vessels that have been found to carry out or support IUU fishing within their own or adjacent convention areas and/or species of competence:
Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR)
Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna (CCSBT)
General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM)
Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC)
International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT)
Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC)
Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO)
North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC)
North Pacific Fisheries Commission (NPFC)
South East Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (SEAFO)
South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO)
Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement (SIOFA)
Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC)
The Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List merges all these sources into one list that provides a single reference point to identify whether a vessel is currently IUU listed. Vessels that have been IUU listed in the past and subsequently delisted (for example because of a change in ownership, or because the vessel is no longer in service) are also retained on the site, so that the site contains a full historic record of IUU listed fishing vessels.
Unlike the IUU lists published on individual RFMO websites, which may update vessel details infrequently or not at all, the Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List is kept up to date with the best available information regarding changes to vessel identity, flag state, ownership, location, and operations.

This report explores the significance of border towns and spaces for strengthening responses to young people on the move. In particular it explores the linkages of young people to local service centres with the aim of further developing service, protection, and support strategies for migrant children in border areas across the region. The report is based on a small-scale fieldwork study in the border towns of Chipata and Katete in Zambia conducted in July 2023. Border towns and spaces provide a rich source of information about issues related to the informal or irregular movement of young people across borders, including smuggling and trafficking. They can help build a picture of the nature and scope of the type of movement young migrants undertake and also the forms of protection available to them. Border towns and spaces also provide a lens through which we can better understand the vulnerabilities of young people on the move and, critically, the strategies they use to navigate challenges and access support.
The findings in this report highlight some of the key factors shaping the experiences and vulnerabilities of young people on the move – particularly their proximity to border spaces and how this affects the risks that they face. The report describes strategies that young people on the move employ to remain below the radar of visibility to state and non-state actors due to fear of arrest, detention, and deportation while also trying to keep themselves safe and access support in border towns. These strategies of (in)visibility provide a way to protect themselves yet at the same time also heighten some of the risks young people face as their vulnerabilities are not always recognised by those who could offer support.
In this report we show that the realities and challenges of life and migration in this region and in Zambia need to be better understood for support to be strengthened and tuned to meet the specific needs of young people on the move. This includes understanding the role of state and non-state stakeholders, the impact of laws and policies and, critically, the experiences of the young people themselves. We provide recommendations for immediate action, recommendations for programming to support young people on the move in the two towns that would reduce risk for young people in this area, and recommendations for longer term policy advocacy.

Operation Smile Empowers Local Communities

- 2. Since 2003, George Argyros Jr. has served as president of Elite Financial Group LLC, a financial holding company in Newport Beach, California. George Argyros Jr. is also a respected philanthropist, supporting such organizations as Operation Smile, an international medical charity that provides surgery for children with cleft lip, cleft palate, and other facial deformities. In addition to performing life-enhancing surgeries, medical teams with Operation Smile offer training and education that allows local medical professionals to continue treating patients within their communities.
- 3. In 2014, medical workers from more than 61 countries volunteered their time to Operation Smile, allowing local workers to learn new techniques and procedures in a hands-on setting. The organization also maintains partnerships with the Peace Corps and NGOs such as UNICEF, World Vision International, and Project HOPE. To date, Operation Smile has provided more than 220,000 free surgeries, and 93 percent of medical volunteers report that their participation in the program has helped them improve the standard of surgical care in their local communities.
