OpenSHIP – Highly reliable computational fluid-dynamics (CFD) simulations

         OpenSHIP is an industrial research project
         to improve the hydrodynamic performance of

         the hull-propeller system in order to reduce the

         ship design costs for shipbuilding companies

         and ship owners.




    OpenSHIP is co financed by the ERDF - European Regional Development Fund - Friuli Venezia Giulia Region
                co-financed
    Operational Programme 2007 - 2013, in the Call for industrial research projects in the field of shipbuild industry and
    yachts. The project was launched on October the 1st 2010 and has a duration of 36 months.



2             The OpenSHIP project
The project idea

    OpenSHIP        uses         solutions   coming   from   High   Performance
    Computing resources (HPC) and high - quality simulations of flows
    around the hull and the propeller, based on OpenSource software.




    The open source software, as a substitute or integrated with
    commercial softwares allows to reach some important aspects such as
               softwares,
    • lower cost of licenses;
    • higher flexibility;
    • hi h customization.

    The background idea is to develop a virtual prototype or simulation framework which takes into account
    the interaction between the hull and the propeller operating in the actual hull wake.
    It is an ambitious goal since this procedure aims to become part of a standard ship design process.


3         The OpenSHIP project
Activities
                                                                                                        Industrial research


                                                 • one-way hydrodynamic coupling between hull and propeller, in which
                                                   one way
                                                   the propeller operates behind the appended hull without hydrodynamic
                                                   feedback;

                                                 • two-way hydrodynamic coupling in which the propeller operates behind
      after “OpenFOAM: origins and evolution”
                                                   the appended hull with hydrodynamic feedback;

                                                 • RANS model:
                                                    − set-up of simulations with both structured and hybrid grids, and
                                                       assessment of different OpenSource grid generators;
                                                    − study, development and implementation of the mathematical models
                                                       and numerical schemes available in the OpenFOAM library;
                                                    − design and implementation of the computing infrastructure HPSC -
                                                       High Performance Scientific Computing;

                                                 • potential model:
                                                     − development of a new Boundary Element Method (BEM) software
                                                        for the simulation of potential flow around the hull with non stationary
                                                        and fully nonlinear free surface and lifting surfaces.

                                                     • RANSE model:
                                                        − customization and advanced use of the OpenFOAM library for the
                                                           prediction of the total hull resistance in calm water and the
    after “CFD Applications in Naval Architecture”         hydrodynamic performance of the propeller operating in the

                                                        − development, customization and advanced use of OpenSource grid
                                                           generators;

                                                     • potential model:
                                                         − non stationary formulation for integration with a model for the 6
                                                            DOF motion of the ship;
                                                         − use of unstructured and non conformal meshes to implement
                                                            adaptive mesh refinements based on the solution and complete
                                                            automation of the meshing process;

                                                     • development of a benchmarking platform shared by partners for direct
                                                       comparison of results obtained with commercial and OpenSource
                                                       software.


5               The OpenSHIP project
Benefits
                             The development of the virtual prototype will bring significant advantages:
                             • reducing the total resistance and power in calm water;
                             • improving the quality of the wake in the propeller disk;
                             • drastic reduction of the cost of the experimental tests in the towing tank;

                             • reduction of risks related to the global and local vibrations induced by the propeller;
                             • development and commissioning of a HPC infrastructure as a reference computing
                               system for CFD application;
                             • improvement of the scientific and technological know-how in CFD and HPSC;
                             • development of a customized service for the prediction of the performance of the
                                     p                                     p                 p
                               propeller-hull system;
                             • reduction of costs of the licenses of commercial software used in the hydrodynamic
                               design;
                             • improvement in the know-how to perform complex computations on increasingly
                               complex computational resources developed in the project.

6     The OpenSHIP project
Partners
    An enterprise involved in ship design and research, a small company in the field
    of Information Technology, two universities and a science and technology park.

    Different experiences and interdisciplinary skills that contribute to the
    achievement of practical results in the field of ship design and in the growth of
    the scientific and business regional community.




    The industrial research and experimental development are carried out by
    CETENA - the Italian Ship Research Centre (lead partner) and Spring Firm Srl,

    in partnership with the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture of the
    University of Trieste and the team of research on Applied Mathematics of SISSA
    - International School for Advanced Studies.

    The coordination and dissemination are in charge of Friuli Innovazione,
    Research and Technology Transfer Centre.

OpenSHIP – Highly reliable computational fluid-dynamics (CFD) simulations g y fluid- y ( ) for the prediction of the hydrodynamic performance of the hull-propeller hull- system in OpenSource background OpenSHIP is an industrial research project to improve the hydrodynamic performance of the hull-propeller system in order to reduce the ship design costs for shipbuilding companies and ship owners. OpenSHIP is co financed by the ERDF - European Regional Development Fund - Friuli Venezia Giulia Region co-financed Operational Programme 2007 - 2013, in the Call for industrial research projects in the field of shipbuild industry and yachts. The project was launched on October the 1st 2010 and has a duration of 36 months. 2 The OpenSHIP project

The project idea p j OpenSHIP uses solutions coming from High Performance Computing resources (HPC) and high - quality simulations of flows around the hull and the propeller, based on OpenSource software. The open source software, as a substitute or integrated with commercial softwares allows to reach some important aspects such as softwares, • lower cost of licenses; • higher flexibility; • hi h customization. higher t i ti The background idea is to develop a virtual prototype or simulation framework which takes into account the interaction between the hull and the propeller operating in the actual hull wake. It is an ambitious goal since this procedure aims to become part of a standard ship design process. 3 The OpenSHIP project

Activities Industrial research • one-way hydrodynamic coupling between hull and propeller, in which one way the propeller operates behind the appended hull without hydrodynamic feedback; • two-way hydrodynamic coupling in which the propeller operates behind after “OpenFOAM: origins and evolution” the appended hull with hydrodynamic feedback; Eugene de Villiers - Engys Ltd OpenSHIP Seminar @ University of Trieste • RANS model: − set-up of simulations with both structured and hybrid grids, and assessment of different OpenSource grid generators; − study, development and implementation of the mathematical models and numerical schemes available in the OpenFOAM library; − design and implementation of the computing infrastructure HPSC - High Performance Scientific Computing; • potential model: − development of a new Boundary Element Method (BEM) software for the simulation of potential flow around the hull with non stationary and fully nonlinear free surface and lifting surfaces. 4 The OpenSHIP project

Activities Experimental development • RANSE model: − customization and advanced use of the OpenFOAM library for the prediction of the total hull resistance in calm water and the after “CFD Applications in Naval Architecture” hydrodynamic performance of the propeller operating in the Andrea Di Mascio - CNR - INSEAN actual hull wake; OpenSHIP Seminar @ University of Trieste − development, customization and advanced use of OpenSource grid generators; • potential model: − non stationary formulation for integration with a model for the 6 DOF motion of the ship; − use of unstructured and non conformal meshes to implement adaptive mesh refinements based on the solution and complete automation of the meshing process; • development of a benchmarking platform shared by partners for direct comparison of results obtained with commercial and OpenSource software. 5 The OpenSHIP project

Benefits The development of the virtual prototype will bring significant advantages: • reducing the total resistance and power in calm water; • improving the quality of the wake in the propeller disk; • drastic reduction of the cost of the experimental tests in the towing tank; p g ; • reduction of risks related to the global and local vibrations induced by the propeller; • development and commissioning of a HPC infrastructure as a reference computing system for CFD application; • improvement of the scientific and technological know-how in CFD and HPSC; • development of a customized service for the prediction of the performance of the p p p propeller-hull system; • reduction of costs of the licenses of commercial software used in the hydrodynamic design; • improvement in the know-how to perform complex computations on increasingly complex computational resources developed in the project. p p p p j 6 The OpenSHIP project
  • 7. Partners An enterprise involved in ship design and research, a small company in the field of Information Technology, two universities and a science and technology park. Different experiences and interdisciplinary skills that contribute to the achievement of practical results in the field of ship design and in the growth of the scientific and business regional community. The industrial research and experimental development are carried out by CETENA - the Italian Ship Research Centre (lead partner) and Spring Firm Srl, in partnership with the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture of the University of Trieste and the team of research on Applied Mathematics of SISSA - International School for Advanced Studies. The coordination and dissemination are in charge of Friuli Innovazione, Research and Technology Transfer Centre. 7 The OpenSHIP project
