This document summarizes a lecture on open design, crafts, and sustainability. It discusses how industrial design has contributed to pollution and waste. It proposes alternative approaches like upcycling, where waste materials are given new value. It presents the work of a group called OpenCrafts that promotes open and collaborative workshops, urban regeneration projects, and social innovation. OpenCrafts aims to make crafts more open and integrate them with new technologies while pursuing sustainability. Examples of its work include reinventing old furniture through upcycling and developing shared frameworks for sustainable production.
Open P2P Design brings open source and peer-to-peer dynamics inside a community-centered design process, in order to have real co-design projects with people and their communities. We can use Open P2P Design for co-designing Open Design processes or commercial or public services with open and peer-to-peer dynamics, starting from communities and involving them inside the design process. We can also use it for analyzing an existing business and opening to collaboration some of its activities, or design new ones in order to start a collaboration with a community of users.

The document warns of the dangers and consequences of substance abuse, including loss of driving privileges, legal fees, higher insurance costs, job difficulties, family devastation, health issues like "meth mouth", and even death. It encourages seeking help from the American Recovery Alliance to get sober and start over with a new life free from addiction.
This document outlines a marketing campaign plan for the American Recovery Alliance (ARA) to promote drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities. The campaign aims to place advertisements in grocery stores and gas stations to reach millions of potential customers. It will also utilize websites, church groups, and businesses to spread information about treatment options. The goal is to generate at least 300 patient referrals per month for participating rehab centers in order to fill empty beds and increase profits, while also using a portion of the funds to feed hungry children. The campaign utilizes mass marketing techniques and will start locally in Florida before expanding nationwide.
This document discusses risk and crisis communication, which helps organizations maintain their reputation after a crisis. It notes that all major organizations use this type of communication, and provides examples like Peanut Corporations of America and oil companies after spills. Maintaining communication helps rebuild trust, brings communities together, and keeps them informed to maintain an organization's image and reputation. Companies need to react quickly during crises, take an active role, and interact with communities to inform them of issues and solutions.
This document describes a new program called the American Recovery Alliance (ARA) that addresses drug addiction and childhood hunger. The ARA works by referring clients to rehab facilities, who then donate to food banks to feed hungry children for each new admission. This "fills beds and fills tummies" in a mutually beneficial way. The goal is to save lives, families, and feed kids through a national marketing campaign promoting the ARA message across multiple channels and reaching millions of people daily.
This document outlines a marketing campaign plan for the American Recovery Alliance (ARA) to promote drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities. The campaign aims to place advertisements directly in front of millions of people through grocery store and gas station receipts, as well as distribute informational cards. The goal is to generate at least 300 new client referrals per month for participating rehab facilities in order to fill empty beds and increase profits, while also using the additional revenue to donate meals to hungry children. The campaign utilizes mass marketing through various media to maximize exposure and drive people to the ARA website for information.

POC21: Accelerating Open Source SustainabilityDominik Wind
The document proposes POC21, an accelerator camp for open source sustainable projects. It will bring together projects, experts, and participants for 5 weeks to rapidly prototype and scale solutions. The goal is to develop and spread replicable models for sustainable living globally through open sharing. The camp aims to catalyze impact ahead of the COP21 climate conference and beyond by facilitating collaboration, mentoring, and widespread adoption of the outputs. It will include research, community building, project selection, the 5 week camp, and post-camp diffusion phases to maximize the potential of open source to address sustainability challenges.
Some people argue we are facing a new industrial revolution for two main reasons: 1) the limitless open source movement which provides free software and resources for technological experimentation and innovation, allowing people to access information to build their own projects, and 2) the makers revolution brought about by new technologies like 3D printing that allow people to design and print objects digitally and to manufacture complex objects outside of traditional factories. This democratization of technology means that knowledge about how to make or "print" things is becoming part of mainstream culture, fueling a makers movement where people can freely share technological knowledge and ideas.

This document discusses the concept of slow design and whether slowness can be found in the products we use. It notes that 80% of a product's environmental and social impacts are locked in at the design stage. Therefore, designers have the ability to influence how consumers use products. The document questions whether there is a design crisis due to products being comprised of many components from around the world. It explores where slow design fits in and what its goals and principles are, such as revealing overlooked experiences and inducing reflective consumption. Examples of slow design products and projects are provided. The document considers where design practice may go in the future.
The document summarizes several student projects that were exhibited to gather feedback from the Knowle West community in Bristol, England. The projects addressed issues in the community like social isolation, lack of education, and unemployment. They proposed solutions like co-housing, community learning spaces, and workshops to promote skills training and local production. The temporary exhibition was designed to be portable and interactive to facilitate an open dialogue with community members.
This document discusses designing products for longer lifespans by considering their entire careers and allowing for multiple generations of users. It provides the example of a table designed by Moniek Gerner that can be used by both children and adults - the children can attach sheets and blankets to hooks underneath to play, while adults can use the same hooks to hang towels. Considering how products can serve different user groups over time can help embed them more in our lives and prolong their useful lives.
This document discusses designing products for longer lifespans through multi-generational use. It provides the example of a table designed by Moniek Gerner that can be used by both children and adults through attachable fasteners and storage spaces. The table allows two different types of use by different user groups, enriching its career and lifespan. Thinking of products that can be used by multiple groups, such as both office workers and cleaners, is presented as an interesting way to design for longevity by embedding products more firmly in our surroundings.

1 We are in Vienna :)

model, which resembled guild’ approach for
several aspects

45. Why... pallets?
1 Pallets are not the “best” packaging material

are the easiest to find

46. Start from Step 1
design an object to be durable

to the raw material available and without mixing

Benefits: obtain something that’s easy to
repair or dispose, working just with the material
needed to produce it.

47. Step 2
dismantle the pallet(s)
Benefits: retrieve the metal that will go back
to its technical cycle as technical nutrient,
becoming other nails.

48. Step 3
clean and smooth the wood
Benefits: obtain a semifinished product that
reveals its own aestethical properties and differs
from traditional wood.
#opencrafts

49. Step 4
make/assemble the object or, alternatively,
a series of that objects
Benefits: obtain unique objects, each with its own
history and peculiar aestethical character.
Even if it’s repeated in-series, it won’t
never be the same.
