A presentation I made in the 35th PPS National Convention at the Ateneo de Davao University, Davao City. This presentation gives suggestions on how to use some free resources available in the internet for classroom use.

1. Not exclusive. Although, you can create a
group for your class, any member can just
add anyone if they like to.

About Me…A civil Engr from PLM (1997); Secondary Educ in CSAB (2005)Now taking DST Physics in UPOU..And I belong to the Generation X
My School…
General Outline of the Talk…A General Intro, … Yesterday’s talk on Web-based tools is a good background..
Are you familiar with these?well for the generation today... our students
these are Our students constant companion! Whether we like it or not
The students we are teaching at present belong to the Digital Generation… they are called the digital natives.
whereas
We are considered digital immigrants.. as if new to their world..
The attention span of our students is very short, they can easily get bored. After 10 minutes, they will be in screen saver move.Of course, I’m not saying that it is okay… but we have to do something about it! We need them to notice us… to notice what we are trying to tell them.
And there is no escape button here!We do not have any choice! If we are really concern about our students learning then
Are these conversations familiar? Our kids are connected!!! That is their language! They are expesed to load of …
We have to learn how to deal with them and learn to put these weapons of Mass Distraction into good use! Our students are using them already and are even experts on them…As teachers, we have to be in the frontline… telling and guiding the students where to go..
In PPS, we are all encourage to share… so, Allow me to share our
Our Tay Tung Experience… Of course, we can always find ways to improve…
and all of them has an account.
and all of them has an account.
Everybody has an access to the internet… Some of them even open the internet everyday! So I CONCLUDED that on-line activities are feasible!
Get the nod of the school admin… my supervisor was a bit hesitant, might be difficult for the students (she was not really convinced, probably);I went to the Principal and explained the idea… and she understood it perfectly, and told be to go ahead!
A big question!! Can we have this for free?
Can we have this for free (or at a minimal cost)?
I started searching the web for possible free Physics websites.
These two websites offer very good materials for your class… illustration and examples are excellent.
Physicsclassroom
While I like using other free websites, I preferphysicsclassroom because of their “Mind on Physics” feature
… MOP…
The Minds on Physics…
The Mind of Physics is about …
… cultivating an active mind in order to get engaged in active learning.
You need shock wave player to run MOP.This must be simple…

Two Options: Credit and practice modes…Basically the same content, but the credit mode gives you a code..So you can use this as assignment to your class.
The practice mode… you can use this for free.
The practice mode… you can use this for free.
Notice the number of required questions…Progress… number correct…Wrong answer… you are allowed 2 – 3 wrongs answer depending on the module..
Another view..
Another example of an interactive quiz at MOP.Notice the progress?
Again
I asked the school if I could collect the amount from the students… more or less P28/yr.I think it is worth the amount.

Let’s see how this Credit mode works.List of Topics… We go to Mechanics.

The Welcome screen. Sorry I have to cover the Teacher Code.
Sample Hints and Help. Usually
A window alert will pop up after your answet.

Initially I used facebook.. I ask the students to PM me their codes.. And check them using my teacher code. The students need to send their Student ID… in order to verify their codes.

The search for an alternative…Which is…
I am enrolled in a DST Program in UPOU… And they are using an LMS, (moodle) for the classes. So that’s it!
What about using Moodle as Learning Management System (LMS)?
An LMS that would allow us to use the different on-line resource all in one site/page.
Of course
A friend commented that moodle is the facebook for teachers!
There are actually a number of sites that offer free hosting for moodle.FreeMoodle.org (a NZ based company)…
Here you will be a teacher managing your course. Your students will be limited to 100.
My Subject with FreeMoodle… Physics Quiz…Still under construction… came about, because my former students (already graduated) requested so they can review their Physics..
The best free moodle site I have found so far! … mdl2.com
Here you will be the administrator! You may even invite some teachers in your school to join you.
My moodle… ahead.mdl2.com
My moodle… ahead.mdl2.com
Main menu of my moodle course site…
What about the content?I don’t have an idea how this thing work?
I was able to invite some colleagues to join me in the moodle.
My Physics subjects for SY 2012-2013
But you will say…
Don’t Worry…I do not have either!
Many things, if not everything, can be found in youtube!
A lot of video tutorials available…
Well, we have to really invest time… our students are into it anyway…And we have to catch up.
I am just amazed by the power of this LMS!
24/7 … you may access this anywhere, anytime!
The teacher has complete control as to who can access it… students cannot just enrol themselves and join the discussions (unlike in fb)
Assignments… I usually give them in advanced… (2 weeks)
files
You can post video links related to the topic…
As to quizzes… If you are using Examview… well, it is a lot easier…
On line discussions is really amazing! Students participate more in the discussion… They write more…Less inhibitions!
Upload materials, pdf, word…Reviewers, etc.
The amazing part still…
A summary… Which you can download in excel format…
The grades of the student… this is what your students see…
