Defining Our Year Together
by Janet Ilko

January 2018
2. The Question: What if someone said that you had to trade
in your name for a word that best describes you as your
"ideal self?"
What word would you choose and why?
Why One Word?
4. We will be listening to excerpts from this
book each day as we write our own words
and create our word page.
The Text Behind the Project
5. The first step is to decide what kind of person you want to be at the end of the
year.
What are the qualities or character traits you admire about yourself and others?
What actions do you want to take in 2018? Can you define that in one word?
Make a list of words in your journal.
Ready Go!
How To Choose Your Word
6. Character Traits
Make a list
Action Words
After you have divided your
paper and listed your words,
sit and reflect.
Select a few words to explore.
7. Now it’s time to define your word.
Start with www.dictionary.com and use both the definition page and thesaurus
page to develop your own definition of the word.
Using Pinterest or Google Safe Search, find quotes and images that use or
further define your word.
Save those images in a folder on your desktop.
Define Your Word
8. The University of the Pacific has a

One Word Mentor Text
9. You now have images, quotes and definitions of your word. Write about your
word. What does it mean to you? Why did you select it? How does it reflect
your hopes for 2018?
Mrs. Ilko will share her mentor text with you as one example.
Share your rough draft with a partner and be prepared to share with your
teacher by the end of the period.
Write Your Rough Draft
10. As a final project for our class, we will compile our words into a book, and a
digital movie.
Please create a page that includes:

can creat our own film to share with
the world.
We will have a team of students pull
together our words and create a
digital book of our work. It will look
