- Poor tailor received a bolt of cloth from a rich customer; you need a coat, make yourself a coat; so he measure and cut, he sewed and he sewed and he made himself a fine coat. He loved that coat. He wore it and wore it until he wore it out. He looked over his tattered coat and realized there was enough fabric to make a vest. So he measured and he cut, he sewed and he sewed, until he had a fine vest. He was so proud of that vest, he wore it everywhere. He wore it and wore it until he wore it out. He looked at the tattered vest and realized there was still enough good material in it to make a hat. He made the hat and he was so proud of it, he wore it everywhere until he wore it out. He looked over the hat and realized there was just enough material left to make a button. So he measure and cut, he sewed and he sewed and he made a button. He was so proud of that button, he wore it and wore it until he wore it out. Then he looked at his button and realized there was just enough left to make a STORY.
- "What begins to matter more [than mere data] is the ability to place these facts in context and to deliver them with emotional impact." Dan Pink Pink: We live in a world where facts are everywhere. If we wanted to know the gross domestic product of Ecuador, my kids could find that online in 15 seconds. What matters more now is the ability to put facts into context and deliver them with emotional impact. And that's what a story does. We have in our head something called story grammar. We see the world as a series of episodes rather than logical propositions; when your spouse asks, "How was your day?" you don't whip out a PowerPoint presentation and a pie chart. Instead, you narrate: "First, this happened, and you'll never believe what happened after that...," and so on. In our serious society, storytelling is seen as being soft. But people process the world through story. Companies are now using a product's backstory as a way to differentiate items in a crowded marketplace. if you want to lead an organization, you have to be effective in creating a compelling vision with a beginning, a middle, and an end. Pain soldiers felt was less than what he had seen in Boston for gunshot victims -- low on morphine, so he had to figure out which soldiers needed it the most. - We need caring tellers in every home and community with the personal warmth and concern that only the intimacy of small group storytelling can provide. Nurturing and caretaking the audience; communicating directly with each listener. Earliest recorded story texts from Babylonian tablets 4000 years ago. Eskimo tales of hunting animals resembling mammoths. When we tell stories we are connecting to a human activity as old as we are. And it’s joy; it’s play; with language; with our audience. It’s beyond reading a book to kids. And when they learn to do it, they learn about language, about listening, about other points of view, about connection.
- There are some boys for whom the written word, whether they are reading it or writing it, is a mystery, a weariness, or even an enemy. This does not mean these boys do not have something to say or a bright future with language, just that they need to develop their skills a little diferently. Visual and oral storytelling taps into intelligences writing doesn’t. Michael teaches storytelling, using speaking exercises like name stories, listening exercises like “witness” or “gossip” (where the most important details usually get through)and pathological liar (great for imagination as they make the tale taller and taller).
- Can tell stories from books; read the book over and over first, then tell it as you like; good way to become comfortable telling tales. Prop stories; when you tell a story with a prop, the visual will keep it in memory forever! But when you take on the challenge of telling stories with props it’s really fun. Then have them do it!
