On the eve of the official launch date of the Obama vs. Romney presidential campaign, regular television programming was interrupted by a “Breaking News” bulletin from CNN. CNN correspondent Anderson Cooper announced that President Obama was about to make an important statement to the American public. Shortly thereafter, the President walked to the presidential podium and announced that Osama bin Laden [the mastermind behind the 9/11 bombings of the Twin Towers in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.] had been killed by Navy Seal Team Six [a Special Forces unit]. My first reaction was of awe, given the timing of the announcement. Then however, my reaction turned to skepticism as CNN began to broadcast images of the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, the terrorists, and the victims of 9/11; in what has come to be known in the neoinstitutional literature as ‘framing’ an issue by the news media. Out of curiosity, I switched to Fox News and was struck by the difference in the coverage and the message they projected. —G. M. Review the following scenario:
Nancy Douglas is an assistant accountant for the hardware division of Crothwall and Associates—an IT company founded in 1997 and currently worth five billion dollars. The company conducts performance appraisals twice a year. Nancy has worked for the company for a year and a half and has received a B grade on her performance for both the appraisal cycles. After her second appraisal, Nancy had made a ten-thousand-dollar accounting mistake. Nancy takes an hour to commute to work and is a single parent. She has two children, ages three and six, and is on medication for insomnia.
Assume that you are an assistant HR manager at Crothwall and Associates. You need to inform Nancy that she has received a C grade on her performance after the third appraisal and this is her only opportunity to improve the quality of her work.
Based on your analysis of the scenario, the module readings, the online library resources, and the Internet, develop a scenario, including dialogue, for the conversation between you and Nancy in this situation. Each part of the United States has at least one ecological crisis based on location, biome, and industrialization pattern. For example, the Midwest was once a prairie with very fertile soil. However, when people realized that with the right watering and drainage system this area could become productive farmland, there arose ecological problems. The conversion of the prairie to farmland is the root cause of many ecological problems in this region.
Regardless of what biome you consider, humans have likely had an impact on the ecology of that area.
For this assignment, identify the biome in which you live. The following are a few examples of biomes:
Tropical rainforests: This biome has high average temperatures, high moisture levels, and high species diversity.
Prairies: The prairies have grassland-variable temperatures, variable moisture levels—depending on proximity to mountain ranges—and are mainly dominated by grasses and ungulate herbivores.

Martinetti, a subsidiary of a publicly owned parent company, is based in Rome where it enjoys an established brand name and superb reputation. Both hotel enterprises share common business values and excellent reputations, and offer high-end luxury accommodations for the local businessman and international traveler. The acquisition offers Martinetti ownership of the Sand Coast brand, trademarks, and contracts for the 9 Sand Coast hotel holdings. With this acquisition, Martinetti gains a footprint in Southeast Asia and expands its holdings 27 percent. Sand Coast has strong brand recognition in the region and has a portfolio that includes both hospitality services and travel agencies. Martinetti, a cross-culture organization, is comprised of approximately 65 percent Italian employees with the remaining representing 7 other countries and languages. San Coast also has a cross-cultural workforce with 88 percent being Singaporean of Chinese, Malay, and Indian ethnicity. Chinese is the official language.
As a member of the Martinetti management team, you have been selected to meet with the Sand Coast Resort leadership team to discuss Martinetti’s approach to market the acquisition in both countries. Your task is to convince the Sand Coast team that Martinelli has a sound strategic communications plan. There is no universal agreed-upon definition of terrorism. Terrorism means different things to different people, governments, and organizations based upon context.
Write a 2-4-page paper in which you do the following:
Summarize, with citations, at least four different definitions of terrorism.

: The definitions must come from sources such as U.S. government agencies (e.g., FBI, DOJ, CIA, DOD, DHS, DOS, DIA, NSA, etc.), international agencies and / or foreign governments (e.g. United Nations, England, Israel, etc.), or terrorism experts (e.g. Bruce Hoffman, Walter Laqueur, Brian Jenkins, Paul Pillar, etc.).
Compare and contrast two of the four definitions summarized in Question 1. Provide a rationale for the differences between the two definitions based upon the context of the people, governments, and / or organizations that developed the definition.

- 1. On the eve of the official launch date of the Obama vs. Romney presidential campaign, regular television programming was interrupted by a “Breaking News” bulletin from CNN. CNN correspondent Anderson Cooper announced that President Obama was about to make an important statement to the American public. Shortly thereafter, the President walked to the presidential podium and announced that Osama bin Laden [the mastermind behind the 9/11 bombings of the Twin Towers in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.] had been killed by Navy Seal Team Six [a Special Forces unit]. My first reaction was of awe, given the timing of the announcement. Then however, my reaction turned to skepticism as CNN began to broadcast images of the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, the terrorists, and the victims of 9/11; in what has come to be known in the neoinstitutional literature as ‘framing’ an issue by the news media. Out of curiosity, I switched to Fox News and was struck by the difference in the coverage and the message they projected. —G. M. Or have you experienced something completely different? Review this week’s Learning Resources, and think about how the media can influence the development of public policy. For this Discussion, consider the following options and choose one to address: Option 1: Compare network television news coverage (e.g., NBC, CBS, ABC) with 24-hour cable news coverage (e.g., CNN, FOX). Explain the differences and similarities you observe in how these news outlets cover the White House. How might 24-hour coverage influence the development of public policy? Option 2: The U.S. government allowed reporters to be “embedded” with military forces during the recent conflict with Iraq. Assess the
- 2. degree to which this experiment influenced the American public’s view on the use of force and the soundness of presidential decision making regarding policy. Option 3: The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has considered rules in the past making it easier for different news companies to be bought by large conglomerates. Critics charge that this will lessen the independence of reporting, while supporters argue that consumers will ultimately punish companies that censor or tilt their news broadcasts to portray themselves in a favorable light. Explain your perspective on news consolidation and how this might influence the public and what impact it might have on public policy. Option 4: If you are an international student and would prefer this option, compare a network television news station in the United States with one in your own nation or country. How does the media in your nation or country frame political issues and influence public policy? Post by Day 3 your response to one of the four Discussion options. Identify the option number you chose in the subject line of your response. Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources. The Option 1 discussion prompt asks for a comparison between network and cable news coverage. In some regards, cable news has joined the networks in being an “old” media. Today, news coverage on the White House also comes from Internet only websites (like http://www.politico.com/ and http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ ).
