Omeka is an open source digital repository platform that allows users to build online collections, exhibitions, and archives. It uses Dublin Core metadata standards and has plugins for functions like importing metadata in bulk. Omeka collections and exhibitions aggregate digital items and allow them to be organized thematically. The Neatline plugin integrates maps and georeferenced historical images into interactive exhibits. While Omeka is free, it requires technical expertise to install and maintain on a web server.

Scholars Portal, a program of the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL), provides the technical infrastructure to store, preserve, and provide access to shared digital library collections in Ontario - including hosting a local instance of Dataverse since 2011. As part of a national project known as Portage (a project of the Canadian Association of Research Libraries), Scholars Portal is partnering with Artefactual Systems, Dataverse, the University of British Columbia, the University of Alberta, and others, to integrate Dataverse with preservation software Archivematica. When completed, this project will facilitate the long-term preservation of research data according to the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) Reference Model.
The Tale of Two Deployments: Greenfield and Monolith Apps with Docker Enterpr...
This document summarizes the experiences of two software engineering teams at Cornell University in migrating their applications to Docker containers. The first team dockerized the university's central financial system (KFS) to enable easier local development and automated testing/deployment. The second team built a new research analytics dashboard from the ground up using Docker to containerize the front-end, API, and data processing components. Open Infrastructure for Cultural Heritage Digital Content
We present an Open Cultural Digital Content Infrastructure, a platform providing a coherent suite of loosely-coupled services that aim to promote quality in repositories and facilitate metadata and digital content reuse. The key functions of the infrastructure are the aggregation of metadata and digital files and the automatic validation of metadata records and digital material for compliance with quality specifications. The system that has recently moved to production, is currently being employed to ensure the quality standards of the output of more than 70 projects that support Greek cultural heritage organisations and are funded by the European Union structural funds. These projects are expected to produce more than 1.5 million digitized and born-digital items accompanied with detailed metadata. The validation is based on a set of quality and interoperability specifications that have been developed for the purpose. The infrastructure has been developed using an open source technology stack and tools and in particular reuses a number of components of the publicly available Europeana aggregator and portal software platform.

Social Media: Just the Next Technical Agility Challenge!
Summary. It is no surprise – librarians network! It’s in our genes. This professional characteristic enables librarians to leverage each other’s work in ways that can be quite dramatic. For example, in the medical world, librarians use a listserv (MEDLIB-L) to facilitate STAT deliveries of medical information directly to those fellow professionals who may be working in one-person libraries that may lack necessary content. However, the leveraging of the network of professional practice is undergoing change as email use is slowly being replaced by social media-based communication such as Twitter and Facebook. In this presentation, Dr. MacCall discusses how we might better use tools such as these both professionally and effectively.
Learning Objective. Learn about various aspects of ongoing research investigating the emergence of professional communication practices supported by social media tools, and how these tools both challenge us and extend our capabilities.
Learning Outcome. Continue to evolve as an agile information professional by understanding how to use the concepts and practices you have already mastered in the context of social media options.

This presentation investigates the characteristics of an online graduate degree program in library and information studies (LIS), and its unusual success in retaining students to degree conferral. It has been reported for more than a dozen years that attrition rates for distance education programs are higher than for those programs in which instruction is delivered face to face. In the present study an online master's degree program in LIS that has maintained an overall retention rate higher than 90 percent over five successive entering classes is examined for explanatory characteristics. These characteristics are described and compared with attributes that the literature relates to retention success. Mapping the characteristics of our LIS program to the factors for retention requires description of specific implementations of the program design. We detail the factors and activities recommended for student retention and provide a summary of the activities inherent in the implementation our successful LIS program. Additional question for investigation are identified.
Optimal organizing of digital images in sports: A project of the Paul W. Bry...
For this presentation, we will describe an ongoing collaborative experiment in the optimal organizing of the digital images of sporting events that is currently underway between the Paul W. Bryant Museum and the School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS) at the University of Alabama. The collection under study consists of images taken by the University of Alabama Department of Athletics and deposited with the Bryant Museum for their long term curation. The Museum’s repository of digital images contains current photography as well as digitized photos of past sporting events. SLIS provides expertise in the indexing of images based on a new method. We will present an overview of the collaboration and details of the ongoing experimentation with optimal indexing methods, including work accomplished by students pursuing their Masters of Library and Information Studies at SLIS.
Education of the 21st century MLIS student for technical agility.
MLIS professors focused on health library education are continually faced with challenge of preparing their students for personal and social media technology use for entering an ever more sophisticated professional workforce. The objective of this paper is to describe identified barriers and the instructional strategies to overcome them in order to facilitate technological agility for the MLIS students taking a health librarianship course (LS534) at the University of Alabama School of Library and Information Studies (UA SLIS) between 2007 and 2012. "Technological agility" pertains to the capability of students to easily and invisibly ("without thinking about it") deploy networked personal and social technologies after course instruction on those technologies.
Since 2007, students enrolled the LS 534 Health Librarianship course at UA SLIS have received course instruction pertaining to the required adoption and use of networked personal and social technologies interwoven into the context of the pedagogical goals and various assignments of the course. Additionally, each student was required to compose an informal two page description of their impressions of the use of these technologies. This paper will report on the types of required networked personal and social technologies required for the course and how they changed during the period of the study (2007-2012). Additionally, results of a content analysis of the student impressions assignment over the time period will be presented with particular interest in evaluating comments related to agility defined as ease of use and invisibility.
Identified barriers to technological agility included the “why” question (why is this tool important?), reluctance in adopting technological innovation, and concerns relating to digital divide issues. Pedagogical methods included linking tool use to specific course communication needs, immersion after tool instruction, playful approach to interacting with technologies to minimize stress of adoption, and emphasis on importance of networked personal and social technologies in building distributed communities of colleagues. Also for those students who brought experience with personal technology and social media use to the course, stress was placed on the importance of understanding these technologies well enough to provide instruction on their use.
Preparing technologically agile MLIS graduates requires an understanding of barriers to adoption and pedagogical strategies for addressing these barriers.
