From premium and ultra-premium pet foods to gourmet pet treats, the pet food industry is an earnings giant for companies. Sourcing quality ingredients came to the forefront with the melamine tragedy of 2007 where contaminated wheat gluten coming out of China was used in pet foods and caused kidney failure and death. This was a wake-up call to pet food and treat producers to carefully vet their raw material providers.

History
The first Icelandic fish oil production was
established in 1938 by Tryggvi Olafsson and his
brother Thordur, in response to a general need for
vitamins A and D. From 1938 to 1950 Iceland
EXPORTEDa large share of its production to the
Upjohn company in the USA, which extracted
vitamins as a benchmark, testing ground and
research site for the company. It all started with a
telegram from E.C. Wise frMost of its production
was EXPORTED to the USA, although during World
War II there was an agreement in effect between
the governments of Iceland and the UK that the
latter would be allowed to purchase half of all
production during the warom the Upjohn Company
in Michigan, USA in 1936.

4. Sustainability
Iceland has Fishing Limits
Since 1901 Iceland has had a sea limit
around the island which marked off
the zone that could be fished by
Icelanders alone. It started as 3 miles
and by 1976 the exclusive area had
expanded to 200 miles. This was done
to protect the diminishing fishing
stock, particularly cod and
haddock.Iceland is a fishing country
and has been forever. This small
country of 310,000 people has relied
on the sea and its major NATURAL
resource–the cod grounds–for its
income.
