Development of low cost TDR system for soil moisture measurementBhushan Patil
Soil moisture measurement is one of the difficult at same time much important task. Numbers of methods are available for soil moisture measurement. But after reviewing all these methods at last we come to the conclusion that each of these techniques has some of the limitations. So, it is always said that the ideal method for soil moisture measurement is yet to be perfected. After studying all of these techniques comparatively it is seen that Time Domain Reflectometer method has very much scope to develop most superior system for the task. TDR is nothing but a technology which measures frequency dependent properties of electric and dielectric materials with the use of electromagnetic waves. First off all EM wave is generated and gets transmitted in the sensor transmission waveguide put into the soil. Due to impedance mismatching fraction of the transmitted signal reflected back whose travelling time is a function of dielectric constant of the soil which depends on the amount of moisture present in the soil. High cost of TDR system is most serious limitation to use this technique. A care is taken while designing to provide highly accurate, low cost solution for soil moisture measurement. To reduce the cost instead of using complex FPGA, simpler low cost microcontroller is used. GSM module is used which gives the low cost, wireless communication so that the reading of the TDR can be send wirelessly in short time. A simple 16*2 LCD display is used, to provide the TDR reading at the site itself. Gravimetric method is used as reference for the calibration.

These events generally develop very quickly and on a small scale, nevertheless they may provoke several damages and affect also the human's safety. For these reasons it is very important to monitor and prevent these natural hazards by means of advanced techniques which must be able to:
● detect the event as soon as possible
● track the behaviour of the event
● predict the short term development of the event
StormTrack is a novel multispectral algorithm for the detection, the tracking and the short term forecast of convective objects developed by Geo-K.
The model is already operational and some web services based on its output are already available. Our work is aimed to show the results of the validation activity developed in the last year.
The StormTrack validation involves the comparison with benchmarks like the Rapid Development Thunderstorms, developed by Meteo France, and the lightning activity over Europe and South Africa.

20. GME (driving model) miss located Gonu center and underestimated the
associated wind and pressure drop.
Clear dependency between GME forecast quality and HRM/COSMO
forecast quality.
Even though HRM/COSMO are not TC specialized models, both have
given the signal for Gonu.
COSMO_07 were able to forecast Gonu as Severe Cyclonic Storm starting
from 12UTC run of 4th June 2007.
On average COSMO shows 5% improvement of track forecast and 3% on
the wind intensity over HRM.
Both HRM_07 and COSMO_07 have signaled 48h rainfall of more than
900mm starting at June 5th with reasonable spacial and good amount
agreement with the recorded rainfall.
21. Both HRM & COSMO are not specialized TC models, Testing the new “TC
bogussing” scheme developed on the HRM community.
Testing the effect of introducing Data Assimilation system for the HRM
model.
Plan to introduce SREF system, and test the performance.
