OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) technology was discovered in the 1970s and has since improved, with color advances in 1989. It is becoming a competitor to LCD and plasma displays. OLEDs are lighter weight, more power efficient, and can be printed on many surfaces compared to LEDs. An OLED works by applying a current across multiple layers, causing electrons to recombine and emit visible light. Currently, OLEDs are used in some cameras and mobile devices. While more expensive now, OLED TVs are in development to become thinner and more efficient than plasma and LCD TVs.
