Global warming is caused by increased levels of greenhouse gases trapping heat in the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels. This is enhancing the natural greenhouse effect and raising global temperatures. Some effects of global warming include rising sea levels from melting glaciers, more intense storms, droughts, species extinction, and disappearing glaciers. Countries like Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Turkey are severely affected by global warming through increased flooding, cyclones, and droughts damaging agriculture. The top countries contributing to global warming are China, the US, Russia, India, Japan, Germany, Canada, the UK, South Korea, and Iran. Small individual actions like planting trees, using energy-efficient light bulbs, and conserving resources in daily activities
Global Warming
Global warming will cause rising global temperatures and sea levels, glacial retreat, more flooding and drought, and changes to agricultural yields and animal habitats. One of the main causes is pollution from vehicles, factories, and CFC gases from products like hairsprays, which also damages the ozone layer. The Kyoto Protocol aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 80% globally, but the United States has not ratified it due to concerns it would negatively impact economic growth.

Deforestation contributes to species extinction, habitat loss, and reduction in biodiversity, to name a few ecological issues. With that in mind, I propose taking action by educating consumers about how their spending contributes to the demand of some commercial agriculture products that contributes to the problem of deforestation.

The development of palm oil plantations in Indonesia and Malaysia has cleared over 10 million hectares of rainforest habitat and greatly threatens many species like orangutans by reducing their homes. Data indicates that the agricultural land occupied by the world palm oil industry is miniscule (1.56%) compared with the total land allocated to growing grains and oilseeds.

If WENGOs (Western Environmental NGO) claim that global warming is caused by loss of forests due to oil palm cultivation, it would be useful to know that oil palm share of world agricultural land is only 0.22 per cent. The share of loss of carbon stock (deforestation) caused by oil palm compared with total global agriculture is thus assumed to be 0.22 per cent. Even the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emission of global agriculture of 17 per cent is considered small compared with the burning of fossil fuel, which contributes 57 per cent of GHG emission.
- 15. Expansion of oil palm on the basis of its impact on global warming is, therefore, scientifically unjustified as the contribution is only 0.0374 % of global GHG emission. If the loss of biodiversity is used as an argument to discourage oil palm cultivation, then ample forest is being conserved. The United Nations convention only requires 10 per cent of the country's land area to be kept as forest for conserving biodiversity, and Malaysia has far exceeded this by committing 50 per cent.
