Identify and Plan Assessments
How will I know if students are learning?
What will they need to do to show mastery?
What products will I collect?
Standards-Based Instruction
What learning activities must I
provide to ensure that all
students show mastery?
Collect and Analyze Evidence of
Student Mastery
Are the students learning? What have
they mastered? What do I need to
reteach?
Standards-Based Curriculum
What do students need to know and
be able to do? What do students
need to learn?
Illinois Learning Standards
• Illinois Learning Standards are the same
throughout Grades 1 – 12.
• Learning Benchmarks are indicated by
developmental level.
• The Performance Descriptors help teachers
align their curricula to the standards at each
grade level.
Illinois State Goals
Broad statements of knowledge and/or skills that organize
the subject matter of a learning area.
Illinois Learning Standards
Specific statements of knowledge and/or skills within a goal.
The standards define the learning needed to reach the goal.
They represent the result of schooling and, as such, they are
exit standards.
KEY TERMS
Learning Benchmarks
Learning Benchmarks are progress indicators for gauging
students’ achievement of each standard. They form the basis for
measuring achievement over time.
Performance Descriptors
Performance Descriptors are a supplement to – not a
replacement for – Illinois Learning Standards. They are
intended to help teachers align their curricula to the standards
and help students meet performance expectations at 10 stages of
educational development.

Selecting Standards,
Benchmarks,
and Performance Descriptors
Phase I
• Essential Standards, Benchmarks, and
Performance Descriptors
• Mapping your Grade Level Plans
Phase II
Moving from Standards and
Benchmarks to determining
Evidence of Student Mastery
• What does mastery look like at this grade level?
• What are the performance tasks?
• What are the performance criteria for mastery?
• How do I communicate this to my students?
Phase III
Designing Instruction
• Common Focus Skills
• Common Instructional Strategies
• Common Learning Activities
• Differentiating Instruction
• Flexible Grouping
• Instruction that includes multiple levels of
understanding
Phase IV
Analyzing Classroom
Assessment Data:
What can the data tell us?
• Analyzing student work, products, and
performances for evidence of mastery
• Analyzing individual student, classroom, and
grade-level performance to inform instruction
• Communicating results to students and parents
NOW THIS CHANGES
EVERYTHING!
• It changes the goal of my instruction.
• It changes my expectations of students.
• It changes how I plan instruction.
• It changes how I measure students’ progress
toward mastery of content area knowledge and
skills.
• It changes what I do with assessment results.
• It changes how I communicate expectations to
students.

Editor's Notes

  1. The CPS Standards-Based Curriculum Initiative has developed a process that will better align CPS with the Illinois Learning Standards and assessments. The primary goal of this initiative is to ensure high quality standards-based instruction for all students. Instructional coherence across the district will support the academic success of students within and across schools. Another goal of this initiative is to support the development of learning communities where teachers are engaged in supporting all students in meeting the standards. In grade level teams, teachers select Illinois Learning Standards and Benchmarks that will focus their instruction. Teachers next determine what students will have to do to show mastery. Teachers within and across grade and content areas collaboratively plan learning opportunities that will lead to the mastery of the standards. Together teachers and students analyze the student’s own work in order to give feedback to students and plan for future instruction.
  2. The CPS Standards-Based Curriculum Initiative supports teachers in aligning all curricula to the Illinois Learning Standards.
