Introduction
Ocular Drug Delivery System (ODDS)
They are specialized dosage form designed to be
instilled into the external surface of eye (topical)
administered inside (intraocular) adjacent (preocular )
to eye.
They novel approch of drug delivery system in which
drug can instilled on the cull de sac cavity of eye is
know as occular drug delivery system.
Note:- cull de sac cavity - the space between eye lids
and eye bolls.
Exmple:- Most commonly-solution, suspension and
ointment

Advantage
It provide sustained and controlled drug delivery.
It increase occular bioavalability of drug.
It bypass the protective barrier of eye.
It can esily adminstered by patient himself.

It show poor bioavalability.
It requres preservatives.
It cause interfrance with vision.
The drug solution not stay long time in eye.

Intraocular Barriers
01:- Drug Loss Form The Ocular Surface
After instillation,the lacrimal fluid remove instilled drug from
the surface of eye.
02:-Lacrimal Fluid Eye Barrier
The epithelium layer of cornea restrict drug absorption from
the lacrimal fulid in ti eye.

03:-Blood occular Barrier
These barriers have two parts; blood-aqueous humor barrier and
blood –retina barrier.
The anterior blood-ocular barrier is composed of the endothelial
cells in the uvea ,this barrier limits the access of hydrophilic drugs
from plasma into the aqueous humor.
Inflammation may disrupt the integrity of this barrier.
