The Monthly Council Meeting of the Community Services Council of Broward County took place on October 16, 2014. Topics discussed included approving previous meeting minutes and cancelling the December meeting, receiving reports from the President/CEO and CPO on new grants and program adjustments, and committees providing updates on agency capacity and special needs programs. a.Accept 21st CCLC Grant and Expenditures
Since 2007, the School District and CSC have been partners in Florida Department of
Education (FDOE) grants for 21st Century programs at low-performing high schools. In
September, FDOE awarded the full $700,000 request to CSC to serve an additional
366 at-risk students at McArthur, Piper and Plantation high schools.

MOST Program at Whispering Pines
Alternative Center
In May 2014, the Council approved funding for a new MOST afterschool
program on the campus of the Whispering Pines Alternative Center, a cluster
school serving students with severe emotional and behavioral conditions who
require specialized educational placement.

and FCI for Child Care for Vulnerable
Populations
Since the inception of the state and federally funded subsidized child care in
Broward, there has been a long waiting list for families to receive services.
Additionally, stringent eligibility requirements for subsidized care often exclude
more vulnerable, working poor populations such as young adults aging out of
foster care, relative and non-relative Kinship caregivers and referrals from the
Center for Working Families.

d. Approve SWIM Central Contract
Adjustments
Since its inception, the Council has been a strong supporter of Drowning
Prevention, both with financial support of SWIM Central and public education
about the importance of water safety. In May 2014, $50,000 additional dollars
were earmarked to specifically address children ages one to four. It was
determined the best use of the funds would be to increase the SWIM Central
contract to increase the availability of swimming lessons for an estimated 1,250
infants and young children ages six months to four years, the most at-risk
population.
