OCEAN is a networking library that provides a clean API for socket programming. It aims to abstract low-level socket details and support multiple protocols and backends. The library contains classes for sockets, servers, conversations and more. It has been tested for TCP, UDP, HTTP, and SOCKS sockets. The current status shows 17 classes, 188 methods, and unit tests cover around 44% of the methods. The document requests help in writing additional tests and improving the library code.

What if you could get rid of all this complexity and replace it by single transport protection protocol, securing all of the traffic between your servers trasparently and with single centralized key and configuration management? This will be a story of a successful implementation of IPSec protocols, largely and undeservedly forgotten in that purpose, for securing a farm of production cloud servers, with configuration centrally managed with Ansible.

Towards Live Programming in ROS with PhaROS and LRP
The document proposes a live programming approach for the Robot Operating System (ROS) using PhaROS and LRP. It identifies limitations of ROS for live programming like static launch files and lack of hot code swapping. The approach integrates a domain specific language for hierarchical state machines called LRP with PhaROS, a ROS client for the Pharo programming language. Wireshark is a free packet sniffer used for network troubleshooting and analysis that was previously known as Ethereal. To use Wireshark, switch ports must be configured to mirror all traffic to a single port for capture. While Wireshark can capture all network packets, servers with IP forwarding enabled should be avoided for packet capture due to risks of unintentionally forwarding packets back out onto the network.

This document describes the process of debugging a packet sniffing issue when using bonded ethernet interfaces on Linux. The bug was initially found when incoming packets were not being detected when sniffing individual physical interfaces, even though outgoing packets were working. After carefully examining assumptions and digging through the kernel and libpcap code, the bug was found to be: 1) the kernel was overwriting the packet's device field, and 2) an older version of libpcap was incorrectly handling packets when using its legacy retrieval method. Updating the kernel fix and libpcap resolved the issue.

Performance is one of the most challenging issues in modern web app design, in large part because modeling, testing, and validating performance before deploying to production is so challenging. While many ops teams have nailed down the problem of re-creating pre-production environments that closely mimic production, those environments frequently rely on known-good components beyond the application code itself: AWS ELB, F5 load balancers, CDNs, Varnish, and more.
Testing plug-in components like that can be challenging, because their performance characteristics don't directly align with application metrics.
- How many simultaneous users can my load balancer support? - What sort of network load will I put on my CDN (i.e., how much will it cost?) - How do different user behavior patterns affect performance?

OSv is the new open source unikernel technology that combines the power of virtualization and micro-services architecture. This combination allows unmodified applications to be packaged just like Docker containers while at the same time outperform bare-metal deployments. Yes. You've heard it right: for the first time ever we can stop asking the question of how much performance would I lose if I virtualize. OSv lets you ask a different question: how much would my application gain in performance if I virtualize it. This talk will start by looking into the architecture of OSv and the kind of optimizations it makes possible for native, unmodified applications. We will then focus on JVM-specific optimizations and specifically on speedups available to micro-service oriented applications when they are being deployed on OSv.
Taking Security Groups to Ludicrous Speed with OVS (OpenStack Summit 2015)
Open vSwitch (OVS) has long been a critical component of the Neutron's reference implementation, offering reliable and flexible virtual switching for cloud environments.
Being an early adopter of the OVS technology, Neutron's reference implementation made some compromises to stay within the early, stable featureset OVS exposed. In particular, Security Groups (SG) have been so far implemented by leveraging hybrid Linux Bridging and IPTables, which come at a significant performance overhead. However, thanks to recent developments and ongoing improvements within the OVS community, we are now able to implement feature-complete security groups directly within OVS.
In this talk we will summarize the existing Security Groups implementation in Neutron and compare its performance with the Open vSwitch-only approach. We hope this analysis will form the foundation of future improvements to the Neutron Open vSwitch reference design.

1. Log into the blue VM as the root user and execute the command "nc -lvp 80" to listen on port 80 using netcat in listening mode.
2. On the red VM as root, execute "nc -nv 10.0.2.12 80" to connect to port 80 on the IP address 10.0.2.12 of the blue VM.
3. Any text entered on the red VM will appear on the blue VM, demonstrating the connection. Terminating netcat on the red VM will also terminate the listener on the blue VM.

The discussion will provide an overview of the challenges, recent new features and what is coming soon in this exciting new area for the software dataplane, in both DPDK and FD.io/VPP!
About the speaker: Ray Kinsella has been working on Linux and various other open source technologies for about twenty years. He is recently active in open source communities such as VPP and DPDK but is a constant lurker in many others. He is interested in the software dataplane and optimization, virtualization, operating system design and implementation, communications and networking.
04 18-2018--nmap port-80_blue_after_netcat
Port 80 is opened on the blue VM by running the netcat command 'nc -lvp 80' to listen on that port. An nmap scan is then run on blue from the red VM using 'nmap -sT -O 10.0.2.12 80' which detects that port 80 is open and identifies the operating system. The output of the nmap scan confirms that port 80 is open on blue as intended after opening it with netcat.
Introduction of openpear
Sotaro Karasawa introduces openpear, an open source PHP package repository. Openpear allows anyone to easily contribute and release PHP packages through a web-based Subversion interface. It aims to address issues with the existing PEAR repository such as outdated packages and a complex release process. New features planned for openpear include improved documentation, tagging of packages, and bug tracking. The goal is for openpear to become a major infrastructure for PHP developers worldwide.

PharoJS - Zürich Smalltalk Group Meetup November 2023

PharoJS for Real World Applications
PharoJS dates back to 2015. True to Pharo's philosophy, it was started to build real world software.
Actually, the initial motivation behind PharoJS was building mobile applications based Web technologies using Cordova (formaly PhoneGap).
This means that for production, Pharo code is transpiled to Javascript to benefit from JS's portability and speed.
But, for development, we wanted to benefit from Pharo's unique set of features and IDE.
To do so, PharoJS provides a framework and a toolset that supports integrating Pharo code with third-party JS libraries.
It also enables testing and debugging applications running on a JS interpreter.
We'll discuss these features, and how they were successfully used to produce real world software.
Client-Server Development with PharoJS
The document discusses the results of a study on the effects of a new drug on memory and cognitive function in older adults. The double-blind study involved giving either the new drug or a placebo to 100 volunteers aged 65-80 over a 6 month period. Testing showed those receiving the drug experienced statistically significant improvements in short-term memory retention and processing speed compared to the placebo group.
ALPAGA : An AeriaL Platform for sampling Atmospheric Gases and Aerosols
The ALPAGA project proposes the construction of an AeriaL Platform for sampling Atmospheric Gases and Aerosols. It involves a drone-based solution to make 3 dimensional maps of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and aerosol particles. Such atmospheric species have well-documented impacts on both health, leading to millions of premature deaths yearly, and climate, nowadays estimated to compensate (at least for aerosols) some of the greenhouse gas effect.
We present the current status of the architecture we have been developing as part of the ALPAGA project. The solution under development involves both hardware and software parts, built on top of a commercial DJI M600 Pro hexarotor drone. On the hardware side we are building a nacelle that will store air samples in containers carried by the drone. Using a Raspberry-pi running ROS, we remotely control a vacuum suction pump to suck air into inert teflon bags. We discuss challenges we have faced so far, solutions we have implemented, and how we plan to automate map construction by geolocalizing samples collected at different locations.
PharoJS ESUG 2019 Update
PharoJS allows developing applications in Pharo that run on JavaScript. It has been ported to Pharo 7 and has over 300 commits on GitHub. The project aims to improve stability, add mobile app tutorials, better integrate third party JS libraries, and fix bugs. Within a year they plan to rebuild the middleware, improve WebSocket support, add more mobile apps, and explore integration with Seaside, desktop apps, and porting to other platforms. Collaborators are welcome on GitHub, their website, Slack, and Twitter.

--- Abstract
UbiquiTalk is an open P2P platform that supports automatic peer interaction without requiring any infrastructure or prior knowledge on interacting peers. Hence, UbiquiTalk can be used either within a network infrastructure or an adhoc network (e.g. Wifi).
Each UbiquiTalk peer, named "host", can act either as a service provider or as a client or both. Users are provided an administration graphical interface to customize their respective hosts, and choose to export or import some services or none. The client part of UbiquiTalk GUI allows user to watch host detection and disappearing. Moreover, it allows users to use some service provided by a particular host. Currently, we have two GUIs one for PDAs and the other for laptops and desktop computers.
UbiquiTalk has been implemented on top of Squeak. It relies on rST (Remote Smalltalk) for remote message sending. Regarding host discovery, We used IP Group Multicast. Therefore, UbiquiTalk can be used through the Internet.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
