9. INTERVIEW WITH MRS. WESLEY
• Identify the cultures/ethnicities and religions that are represented in your classroom.
The students are Spanish, Haitian, Vietnamese, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Arabic, and American.
All festivals, holidays, clothing, etc. is Catholic centered, including weekly Mass.
• Can you identify a value/behavior that might be in conflict with your own?
No personal conflicts.
• How do you deal with this conflict in your classroom?
There are 5 students that are not Catholic and the parents do not want them attending mass.
Mrs. Wesley made arrangements with the parents that the students could be dropped off after
mass was completed. At 8:45am instead of 7:45am.
• What are the ways or means that you adapt to know your students?
By observing them, talking with them and promoting respect, fairness, and high expectations.
Making sure all students participate during class activities and they work together supporting
one another.
• What kinds of accommodation are made for the ethnic specific cultures or minority students?
We have staff members that speak Spanish, French, and Creole to help the students
communicate.
• What programs/ideas does your school use to promote diversity in the school?
Everything is taught according to the Catholic Diocese. Once a month all staff members get
together to share ideas on how the classes are going and to generate ideas were it changes
might be needed.
