Health Inequalities and Smoking, Dr. Helen McAvoy
This document discusses health inequalities related to smoking. The country's healthcare system has examples of both good policy matches, like its successful tobacco control policies, and mismatches, as obesity policies have lagged despite high obesity rates. While Australia has a mixed public-private healthcare system called Medicare, the system faces issues from divisions between state and federal governments, poor coordination, and workforce shortages. Future priorities include policy actions on obesity and lifestyles, reducing cancer and diabetes, and advancing medical technology.

The Health and Social Care Information Centre has hosted a series of road shows jointly with the Electronic Staff Record (ESR) Central Team and Health Education England to highlight developments in NHS workforce information, data standards and data quality.
Here are the slides presented at the third event, held at Bruntwood City Tower, Manchester on 1st March 2016.
Data quality is all about collaborative working with a shared purpose and this is the main driver behind our road shows during 2015/16. Any efforts to improve data quality should have mutual benefits and should provide a platform for discourse between all involved. Collectively we can ensure that the data that is used to inform decisions about the workforce at local, regional and national level is as accurate as possible. These PowerPoint slides present key data and information on adult obesity in clear, easy to understand charts and graphics. They have been produced by the Obesity Risk Factors Intelligence team in the Health Improvement Directorate and can be used freely with acknowledgement to ‘Public Health England’.
These slides should be useful to practitioners and policy makers working to tackle adult obesity at local, regional and national level. For example they are regularly used to make the case for tackling obesity in presentations to health and wellbeing boards, other committees and to elected members as well as in regional and national conference and workshop presentations.

The major causes of mortality are circulatory disease and cancer. Other issues include high rates of smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, and non-communicable diseases. The program focuses on high-risk areas and bringing services directly to communities. National policies also target CVD through initiatives aimed at early detection, treatment, and prevention across demographic groups.

Sustainable Healthcare Report
The document summarizes the key reasons for change outlined in the 2011 Transforming Your Care (TYC) review of Northern Ireland's health and social care system. The main drivers for change included an aging population, rising chronic conditions, and instability in the current system. TYC presented 11 compelling reasons for reform, including the need for more preventative care, patient-centered community services, sustainability due to rising demand, and better use of resources. The Global Burden of Disease project involves more than 1,000 researchers in over 100 countries, and pulls together data on premature death and disability from more than 300 diseases and injuries in 188 countries, by age and sex, from 1990 to the present.
This enables us to make meaningful comparisons between countries over time, and rank the diseases and risk factors in terms of their overall burden on a population.

Public perceptions and awareness of NHS England's calorie reduction programme
An Ipsos MORI survey, commissioned by Public Health England (PHE), explored the public’s perceptions of obesity and PHE’s sugar and calorie reduction programmes. Our findings highlight that the public clearly recognise obesity to be a problem facing the UK (93% say it is a problem). The public bestow the government (72%) and the food industry (80%) with responsibility for tackling obesity, albeit less responsibility than individuals and their families (90%). The predominant view is that the government could do more to address the issue of obesity (60%). There is also strong public support for the government to work with the food industry, in order to make foods and drinks healthier.
A night nursing service for people with a non malignant illness
The document outlines a night nursing service in Ireland for people with non-malignant illnesses and compares data on access to specialist palliative care services between Ireland and the UK from 2011-2013. It finds that in both countries, the number of people with non-malignant illnesses accessing specialist palliative care services is rising, accounting for 16-17% in the UK and 19-26% in Ireland. There is some variance between referrals to specialist palliative care services and the night nursing service in different areas of Ireland that is not fully explained by population differences or UK trends, suggesting limited awareness of the service in some areas.

Weight loss 15
This review paper examines evidence on dietary and other factors that influence weight gain and obesity at the population level. It finds convincing evidence that regular physical activity and high fiber intake protect against obesity, while sedentary lifestyles and consumption of calorie-dense, nutrient-poor foods increase obesity risk. It recommends a range of strategies to address obesity, including making healthy foods more available, limiting marketing of unhealthy foods to children, promoting active transportation, and improving health services and messaging around nutrition and physical activity. Comprehensive programs are needed to reverse obesity epidemic trends affecting both rich and poor countries.

This review paper examines evidence on dietary and other factors that influence weight gain and obesity at the population level. It finds convincing evidence that regular physical activity and high fiber intake protect against obesity, while sedentary lifestyles and consumption of calorie-dense, nutrient-poor foods increase obesity risk. It recommends a range of strategies to address obesity, including making healthy foods more available, limiting marketing of unhealthy foods to children, promoting active transportation, and improving health services and messaging around nutrition and physical activity. Comprehensive programs are needed to reverse obesity epidemic trends affecting both rich and poor countries.

The Health and Social Care Information Centre has hosted a series of road shows jointly with the Electronic Staff Record (ESR) Central Team and Health Education England to highlight developments in NHS workforce information, data standards and data quality.

Data quality is all about collaborative working with a shared purpose and this is the main driver behind our road shows during 2015/16. Any efforts to improve data quality should have mutual benefits and should provide a platform for discourse between all involved. Collectively we can ensure that the data that is used to inform decisions about the workforce at local, regional and national level is as accurate as possible. The Intelligent Data Tool (IDT) analyzes data from 14 million annual NHS Pathways calls to provide intelligence about symptom prevalence, performance, and service usage. It turns call data into dashboards that empower commissioners to manage 111/999 contracts by providing filters, symptom trends, and performance management summaries. - 1. Key facts for England The latest data for England shows: In 2013, about one in four of the adult population was obese (26 per cent of men and 24 per cent of women). There were nearly three times as many hospital admissions with a primary diagnosis of obesity for women (8,010) than for men in 2012-13 (2,950), and this continues a ten-year trend. In 2012-13, admissions for those aged 15 years or under (560) increased by 12 per cent and 6 per cent for those aged 65 years or over (590). Obesity-related admissions in all other age groups fell. In 2013-14 more than one in five children in Reception and one in three children in Year 6 were measured as obese or overweight. In 2013-14 one in four children in Year 6 who lived in the most deprived areas of England were obese compared to one in eight children who lived in the least deprived areas. Women accounted for over three times as many bariatric surgery procedures (6,080) compared to men (1,940) in 2012-13, and this continues a ten-year trend. In 2012, there were 392,000 prescriptions for treating obesity, which was 56 per cent lower than in 2011 (898,000) and represents a decrease of 47 per cent on 2002 figures (737,000). The total net ingredient cost decreased from £31.2 million in 2002 to £13.3 million in 2012. Obesity HSCIC data on obesity are compiled from a variety of sources which give insight into the trends in obesity in adults and children in England. The data also provide information on prescriptions for treating obesity, trends in purchases and consumption of food and drink, and health outcomes of being overweight or obese. Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) also provide data on obesity-related admissions and bariatric procedures for treating obesity.
