Editor's Notes

  • #4 The problem is that traditional infrastructure was not designed for cloud environments. The enterprise datacenter needs to be re-platformed to meet the needs of the enterprise cloud Let’s now look at how Nutanix solved this infrastructure challenge. Nutanix pioneered the concept of hyperconverged infrastructure. Hyperconvergence natively converges compute and storage into x86 servers with attached flash and hard disk drives that are deployed as a cluster Customers can start with a small footprint — three nodes in as little as 2U of rack space, and can add compute and storage capacity when needed. Hyperconvergence radically simplifies how infrastructure is deployed and managed, and reduces the footprint of IT infrastructure by up to 90% Nutanix has not stopped there. The Nutanix solution natively integrates enterprise-class virtualization right into the product. The hypervisor comes pre-installed on all Nutanix appliances, and cluster and VM management is built into the integrated management platform that is also part of the standard product. No additional components to install or manage. Powerful virtualization features such as VM high availability, live migration and one-click hypervisor upgrades come standard and can be fully managed using the same management interface. Admins can configure their Nutanix clusters in minutes and start deploying applications right away.
  • #5 Let’s take a look at the Nutanix architecture. The Nutanix solution is deployed as a cluster of servers or nodes — starting with at least three. Each node has CPU, memory, flash storage and hard disk drives, and has a hypervisor pre-installed. You can change the hypervisor if you want to ESXi or Hyper-V The nodes are connected to each other over a 10 Gig Ethernet switch - any standard switch will do. The Nutanix software runs in a user-mode VM called the controller VM on each node in this cluster. The Controller VMs or CVMs talk to each other and create a single storage pool using the storage drives on all the nodes in the cluster. This is called the Distributed Storage Fabric or DSF. DSF distributes data and metadata across all the nodes in the cluster, and provides enterprise storage features such as deduplication, compression, cloning, tiering and resilience in a truly distributed way with no single points of failure or hotspots in the cluster. This scale-out architecture allows you to grow the cluster by adding nodes when needed without limits. You get linear predictable performance and capacity increases as the cluster grows. The Nutanix solution delivers data locality to provide the best VM and cluster performance. All I/O requests from a VM are handled by the local controller VM on that node. When a VM writes data, one copy of the data is always written to the local node. That way, read requests can be handled immediately using data on the same node without going over the network. If the VM moves to a different node, then over time the data also migrates to the remote node to restore locality. The Nutanix solution is 100% software-defined and doesn’t rely on custom hardware for any capabilities. Current Nutanix customers can get the benefits of software innovation by installing the latest software release with a single click Remember to: Talk about our web-scale engineering: When Nutanix set out to solve the problem of legacy infrastructure, we looked at how companies like Facebook, Google and Amazon solved the problem in their datacenters. These companies started pushing the limits of their infrastructure in ways that traditional businesses did not. They ran into the limitations of legacy infrastructure architectures. They hired systems engineers and PhDs to come up with a new approach to infrastructure and IT operations, what we now call web-scale IT that is built around a fundamentally different architecture. Nutanix brings the power of web-scale to enterprise infrastructure. The Nutanix solution is built from the ground up using the same web-scale technologies and architectures and is engineered to meet the needs of enterprise environments. So customers get the benefits of web-scale architectures without having to build their own web-scale infrastructure solutions to run enterprise applications. Use the whiteboard if appropriate to talk about the system architecture. This is a good slide to talk about our technology and how hyperconverged systems are fundamentally different from vBlock style architectures
  • #6 Nutanix is committed to providing flexibility and choice when it comes to runtime environments. From our early days, we have given our customers a choice of hypervisors to run their applications on, including ESXi, Hyper-V and the native virtualization solution, AHV We have a set of technologies built into the Nutanix solution called the App Mobility Fabric that make it easy to move applications and data between different hypervisors and to public cloud services and back. Let’s look at a couple of examples: Nutanix has a tool called Foundation that makes it extremely simple to install the hypervisor that you want on a Nutanix cluster. With Foundation, you can change the hypervisor in a matter of minutes We also have a one-click hypervisor conversion capability that allows you to change the hypervisor on a Nutanix cluster (with VMs running on it) from ESXi to AHV with a single click. You don’t have to move the VMs or data out of the cluster manually – the system takes care of converting VM formats, installing paravirtualization drivers, registering VMs, converting hosts, etc. behind the scenes Nutanix allows you to do backup and DR between two Nutanix clusters running different hypervisors (cross-hypervisor backup and DR) We also introduced Cloud Connect, which gives you the ability to backup data from a Nutanix cluster to public cloud services (Amazon AWS or Microsoft Azure) without the need for third-party tools or external management. This entire process is built into the Nutanix solution At the end of the day, it’s about allowing you to use the hypervisor or cloud that best meets the needs of your different environments without getting locked in
  • #7 Security in the enterprise datacenter begins with a robust infrastructure platform. But maintaining security with traditional infrastructure environments is challenging for a number of reasons In the legacy three-tier infrastructure stack, you have products from several vendors each with a narrow, fragmented view of security. The storage vendor thinks about just storage security, while the virtualization vendor looks only at virtualization. A lot of the security issues we see today happen because of misconfigurations between products from different vendors Validating and maintaining a security baseline, for example, through software upgrades, is time-consuming and often involves error-prone manual processes that take away from innovation and productivity Security shouldn’t be an afterthought or a big overhead for a business to maintain. Nutanix takes a comprehensive, defense-in-depth approach to security that covers the entire infrastructure lifecycle, from how the product is built to how it’s deployed and managed. Nutanix’s holistic approach to security covers three key pillars: 1. Platform: With the security development lifecycle, security is incorporated into product development from the start – avoiding difficult tradeoffs between security and performance or features. For example, research and development teams work together to fully understand all the code in the product, whether it is built in-house or inherited from dependencies. Strict tests for Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) are built into the product QA process, and updates to handle known CVEs are scheduled for minor release cycles to minimize zero-day risks without slowing down product evolution. Our view of security covers the entire infrastructure stack, from storage to virtualization 2. Automation: Nutanix publishes custom security baseline documents, called security technical implementation guides (STIGs) that cover the entire infrastructure stack and prescribe steps to secure deployment in the field. These STIGs are published in a machine-readable format, allowing for automated validation and ongoing monitoring of the security baseline for compliance. Nutanix has implemented security configuration management automation (SCMA) to efficiently check over 800 security entities in the Nutanix STIGs that cover both storage and built-in virtualization. Nutanix automatically reports log inconsistencies and reverts them to the baseline. With SCMA, systems can self-heal from any deviation and remain in compliance (hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly intervals). 3. Ecosystem: No product is an island. Nutanix takes a holistic approach to delivering comprehensive security through a broad partner ecosystem meets diverse security needs. This includes network security, end-point security, and data security Our approach to security is comprehensive and truly differentiated in the industry. Nutanix systems meet a broad set of certification requirements to ensure compliance with the strictest standards. Remember to: Talk about how many federal civilian and defense agencies trust the security model developed by Nutanix
  • #10 Let’s take a look at what infrastructure management looks like today. With legacy infrastructure, you have multiple management panes. The burden of making them all work together to provide end-to-end visibility and control is shifted to the admin. Nutanix Prism gives administrators a simple and elegant way to manage virtual environments. Prism uses powerful data analytics and heuristics to simplify and streamline common workflows within a datacenter, eliminating the need to have multiple piecemeal management solutions. Prism gives administrators a simple and elegant way to manage virtual environments. With Prism, admins can centrally manage their entire infrastructure stack all the way from physical clusters and storage up to virtual machines. Prism uses powerful data analytics and machine learning heuristics to simplify and streamline common workflows within a datacenter, eliminating the need to have disparate management solutions. Prism provides features that deliver rich insights about day-to-day operations of the datacenter. For example, customizable operations dashboards give at-a-glance summary of application and infrastructure state. Administrators can also make use of predictive analysis of capacity usage and trends based on application behavior. Nutanix understands that automation shouldn’t stop at just providing scriptable interfaces for infrastructure. In an enterprise cloud, the infrastructure has automation built-in so that you don’t need to script anything to get the benefits
  • #11 Now, let’s talk about the actual products that Nutanix offers. There are two foundational products in the Nutanix solution -  Nutanix Acropolis, and Nutanix Prism.  Acropolis is the data fabric that natively converges compute, storage and virtualization to run any application at any scale.  Prism is the control plane that simplifies datacenter operations by providing a single pane of glass to manage compute, storage and virtualization and offering rich automation and operational insights.
  • #12 Xtreme Computing Platform (XCP) delivers invisible infrastructure, enabling IT teams to focus on what matters to them — the applications and services that power their business. Comprised of two comprehensive product families, Nutanix Acropolis and Nutanix Prism, XCP extends the industry-leading hyperconverged solution to enable application independence from infrastructure with an advanced app mobility feature, native virtualization and consumer-grade search capability. These innovations greatly simplify the datacenter, reduce costs and enhance IT service delivery.
