Additional Resources
for Writing
After reading Google Doc Responses for
Learning Unit #7 (Writing), I assembled
additional resources that were based on
topics that came up in your discussions!
Children’s books to inspire writing!
Blog Resource: Two Writing Teachers
https://twowritingteachers.wordpress.com/ (a blog I
like to follow for writing ideas)
Read about the writers of this blog and you will
want to keep their blog bookmarked:
https://twowritingteachers.org/about-us/
You can search topics about teaching writing on this
blog to find what you need. For example, I did a
search in spelling and found these great resources:
https://twowritingteachers.org/category/spelling/
Katie Wood Ray:
 Katie Wood Ray writers professional books on writing for teachers of young children. I
guarantee you will learn many new techniques and strategies from her works. I cannot
really recommend one book in particular since each is tailored to specific topics. But
by visiting her book page (last link) you can read about each text to see which one
interests you. We have all of her books at the GVSU library and some of her videos!
 Twitter: @KatieWoodRay
 https://youtu.be/y4KIcbOe5kQ (Video about writing stamina with young children)
t?rh=n%3A283155%2Cp_82%3AB001IGNT6M&qid=1460305886&sort=date-desc-rank
(professional books by Katie Wood Ray)
 https://www.heinemann.com/authors/1636.aspx (Bio and more books)
Ralph Fletcher:
 If you are not familiar with Ralph Fletcher, you will want to become
familiar with him and his works! He has excellent resources to help you
teach writing. Visit his website and for sure, take a look at his
professional books for teachers. You will not be disappointed! We have
some of Ralph’s books at the GVSU library.
 Chapter books for kids: Marshfield Dreams or Fig Pudding (read one
and you will not be disappointed!
 Latest books:
 http://ralphfletcher.com/ (Go to the “Teacher’s Hangout” for many free
downloadable pdf’s. Also check out “Tips for Young Writers”…it has
ideas talked about in many of your discussions!)
Mentor Texts Resources:
 http://www.lausd.net/Corona_EL/Mentor_Text.html (This information
comes from two of Ralph Fletcher’s books and gives you a taste of his
works!)
Invented Spelling: a big topic of discussion
in many of your groups!
 Phonics They Use: presents many strategies students need to know to look at word patterns
and analogy. This provides a way to enable students to spell hundreds of words! (Just
teaching 37 spelling patterns allows children to spell over 500 words! See page 141 of PTU.)
See Chapters 10, 12 & 13.
 Some discussions talked about the link between reading and writing. This article shares recent
research that young children using invented spelling may lead to better readers!
http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/curriculum/2017/05/invented_spelling_leads_to_better_readi
ng.html
 Many studies have been done on invented spelling and the positive effects. This is a great
article to use with administrators and condense findings for parents to show the benefits of
invented spelling: Invented Spelling, Word Stress, and Syllable Awareness in Relation to
Reading Difficulties in Children. A quote from the article: “Thus, it is anticipated that invented
spelling might be a precursor to facilitate children’s learning to become a reader.” The article
is on BB in Course Information along with a second article.
 Invented spelling requires strong spelling instruction and support to transition children to
spelling words conventionally. It is an important process for children to encounter for
developmentally understanding spelling!
Author’s Chair…many of you talked about the
importance of sharing writing! It IS important if we
want children to see themselves as writers.
 This is a concept that has been used for many years…Donald
Graves wrote about it in 1983! I have placed that article in
course information (if you read anything, read the benefits of
using an author’s chair at the end of the article!).
 Here is a short video clip to see the author’s chair in action:
https://youtu.be/-PCE9w7Znmk
Children
autograph the
chair after
sharing their
writing!
