High availability is an important requirement for any online business and trying to architect around failures and expecting infrastructure to fail, and even then be highly available, is the key to success. One such effort here at Netflix was the Active-Active implementation where we provided region resiliency. This presentation will discuss the brief overview of the active-active implementation and how it leveraged Cassandra’s architecture in the backend to achieve its goal. It will cover our journey through A-A from Cassandra’s perspective, the data validation we did to prove the backend would work without impacting customer experience. The various problems we faced, like long repair times and gc_grace settings, plus lessons learned and what would we do differently next time around, will also be discussed.

It's the year 2015, so unless you've been living under a rock for the last decade, you probably have heard about servers and platforms needing to go asynchronous in order to scale. But really, how deep did you dive into the reasons as why this need arrises? This talk aims to explain the various reasons and techniques that can be (and often are) used in developing high performance web applications - from the kernel depths, to the high level abstractions that all contribute to such designs.
We'll start with the lowest level of them all - the network transports we all use and how they impact latency in our systems.
Then we will move on to operating systems' socket selector implementation details and the now legendary C10K problem, to see how implementations were forced to change in order to survive the ever-rising number of concurrent connections. Next we'll dive into processor and thread utilisation effects and how parallel programming - using either message-passing or stream processing style libraries fits into the grand picture of pursuing the most stable and lowest latency characteristics we could dream of.

Deep Dive into Cassandra
- Cassandra is an open source, distributed database management system designed to handle large amounts of data across many commodity servers. It was originally developed at Facebook in 2008 and is now an Apache project.
- Cassandra provides high availability with no single point of failure, linear scalability and performance of tens of thousands of queries per second. It is used by many large companies including Netflix, Twitter and eBay.
- Data is organized into tables within keyspaces. Tables must have a primary key which determines how data is partitioned and indexed. Cassandra uses a decentralized architecture with no single point of failure and automatic data distribution across nodes.
