11. • Social Enterprise- A Definition Dilemma
– "Social Enterprise means different things to different people in
different contexts and at different points in time“ Third Sector Research Centre
– “....this create a dilemma as it has the potential of being unhelpfully
interpreted as social enterprise meaning anything to anybody, in any
context and at any point in time?

12. Quotation from Charles Leadbeater (2002)- “Social Enterprises are hybrids
mixing social values and goals with commercial practices”
Bill Gates (Microsoft) has pledged to give away 95% of his fortune to fight
disease in the third world. Could this be viewed as mixing commercial goals
with social practices, and does this make Microsoft a Social Enterprise?
Muhammad Yunus Quote and Youtube link providing clarify & focus to the
debate.

15. Sustainability Through Trading
Easy to over promise, more difficult to deliver
“I represent three non-profits; an alcohol drug residential treatment
centre, a transitional employment organization for recovering addicts,
and a local food pantry. We are exploring starting a bakery to provide
job training for newly recovering addicts and provide foods for the
pantry and to raise revenue for our respective organizations. Can
anyone point us in a direction to research other start-ups related to
this possible social enterprise?”

Movie Clip (Comedy sketch) demonstrating that there is no right or wrong order/ approach to progressing people into employment. The Social Enterprise Model supports and enhances the Supported Employment Model with open employment being the end objective of the twin track approach, i.e “playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order”
Social Enterprise- A Definition Dilemma.
No single definition of the term Social Enterprise leaded to a wide variation in definitions
Various definitions of social enterprise explored and challenged
Example from Muhammad Yunus brings clarity and focus to the debate.
Much used example of a successful social enterprise is FIFTEEN ( A restaurant concept founded by the celebratory chef Jamie Oliver) which used a working restaurant as an environment to engage, support and train young disadvantaged people to get their lives on track with employable skills
Quotation from the CEO of FIFTEEN Cornwall which reinforces the challenges that they face in making the business self sustaining through their trading activities
Example from an online social enterprise networking forum which highlights the general perception that Social Enterprise can deliver many benefits. Presenter challenges and cautions social entrepreneurs about unrealistic expectations
Satirical use of the stapline used by the John Lewis Partnership (High street department store that is a Social Enterprise)
Recommended reading before engaging in Social Enterprise initiatives. The Wall Street Journal headline from June 2007 which challenges the perception that Social Enterprise can provide a funding solution for the not for profit sector. Hyperlink to this article included
