Pandemic Impacts Americans’ Ability to Pay Bills

The current pandemic has taken a toll on the personal finances of a vast majority of Americans. According to a recent doxoINSIGHTS Bills Pay Impact Report, which collected data from 1,568 sampled households, 42 percent of the country’s consumers have missed a bill payment, while 39 percent believe they will miss a payment in the future.
Around a quarter of missed payments were for car loans or utilities such as Internet and cable. Of greater concern is the 20 percent of Americans who have skipped a rent or mortgage payment. Twenty-eight percent say it is likely they will miss a payment in the future. On the other hand, only one-tenth of Americans have missed a health insurance payment, indicating that personal health during a pandemic is a priority.

Republicans have addressed the issue of immigration in education through the reaction of the 2010 DREAM Act. The Act was made to help illegal immigrants who were brought to the United States as children though higher education and military as well as tax credits, social security, Medicare benefits and federal student loans. It promotes the argument that the DREAM Act would educate thousands of young people and enlist them in Armed Forces which would benefit the United States as well as boost the economy because of increased productivity.
The Dream Act consisted of two main controversial parts: the pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants instead of deportation for children under the age of 16 and the second consisted of provision of public benefits, particularly higher education benefits. Higher education benefits would qualify to students who were it not for their lack of legal residency. This would fund public education for illegal immigrants which would then affect federal budgets which has been a very controversial subject for many Americans.
Republicans viewed the DREAM Act as “back door amnesty” that would reward the violation of immigration laws. It would then encourage more migration to the United States and eventually strike an exponential population growth (Harvard Journal of Legislation 623). It was also viewed a bad idea because Republicans felt that the limited spots for higher education would then be given to illegal aliens instead of American candidates. Not only would the spots for higher education be replaced with illegal aliens but the government aid would rise and would affect tuition to subside to them as well. There was thought by Republicans that the Act would grant legal status to criminal illegal aliens as well as create a safe zone for any of them facing deportation. Republicans aimed more towards securing the boarders against immigration and enforcing the immigration laws instead.
About 54% of Americans supported and favored the pathway to citizenship and the DREAM Act in late 2010 (Harvard Journal of Legislation 625). Nine-in-ten or 91% of Latinos for example, support the DREAM Act and 84% say unauthorized immigrants should be eligible for in-state tuition for public colleges if they attended high school in their.

Immigration has been wrongly used in the political arenas as political leaders strive to throw their weight around while portraying their competitors how better they are. To the citizenry, immigrants increase competition in the already scarce employment opportunities. Immigrants cheaply provide easily accessible labor hence being preferred over the hosts of the country. On the other hand, they increase competition on available social amenities such as education and health care, hence at times referred to as a burden to the economy. People migrate while escaping wars and natural calamities such as hunger.
In contrast, others move illegally following societal ills such as human trafficking, where they end up in social evils such as prostitution. Whether migrating through the right or wrong channels, deportation has far-reaching effects, especially with the involvement of parents. Right measures should be implemented in dealing with the issue of deportation.
Granting amnesty is one of the options that could be explored in dealing with the deportation of parents. Amnesty entails the granting of a formal legal status to individuals with an illegal residence in a country and is awaiting deportation. The issue of amnesty among immigrants is received with mixed reactions. While some political leaders use the amnesty programs as a means of benefiting themselves, the citizens of the country view the move as a means of suppressing their access to resources. According to Levy (2010), people in support of an amnesty program among the illegal migrants view the deportation of illegal immigrants as being an impractical move. The deportation process is hectic for both the officials and the involved parties. Levy (2010) noted that the deportation process is time-consuming, requires a lot of effort, and is labor-intensive.
The country would have to incur additional costs in trying to correct a situation created by people who failed to take their jobs seriously. Also, it is not a guarantee that all illegal immigrants would be successfully deported as some may escape detection, which means that the government goes through all that trouble for nothing. Instead, the government should use the challenge of illegal immigrants to its advantage. Numerous low-skilled employment positions are unfilled because Americans cannot fill the positions, despite being crucial to the nation's economy. Overview
Undocumented immigrants can be defined as those people who were not born in America and have no legal rights that allow them to live in America. Undocumented immigrants are also known as aliens but this is not a legal term and it is widely used among the Americans because of its abusive connotation. It is believed that there are more than 11 million people living in America as illegal or undocumented immigrants in United States and this number has stood steady in the last the last eight years consecutively (Massey & Gentsch, 2014). This has been credited on many things that include stability of the Mexican economy and the gradual economic gains of nations across the world that have witnessed a number of its citizens moving to America to seek employment. Other immigration experts attribute this to the recent signed immigration policy by the Trump administration in United States. This paper will look at some of the issues around immigration in America that impact undocumented immigrants.
Undocumented Immigrants
The report that was released this year on the number of undocumented immigrants in the United States has remained steady in the last seven years and it has stood at 11.3 million. One reason as to why the number of undocumented immigrants in America has been steady is because of the Mexican economy stability and the improved rules and regulations on immigration in America that have been passed in the last few years (Goldman et al., 2014). The number of undocumented immigrants is likely to go down further in the next few years given the deportation policy that has been passed into law by the Trump administration in the recent past. The policy though controversial has given the immigration department powers to identify any undocumented immigrant and depot them back to their countries. the united states federal government has maintained that the proposed wall on the Mexican American border remain the highest priority of the current administration and this will contribute to the reduction of undocumented immigrants in America (Jiang, 2017). Mexico has been the mother of countries that produce most of the undocumented in American but it reduced to just 49% in 2016 and they have dropped from 6.4 million in 2009 to 5.6 million in 2015. The number has been increasing due to instability among most countries and people have flown to America to seek refuge and asylum.

The current immigration policy has come under sharp criticisms from both the political and scholarly communities. The Trump administration proposed an immigration policy that would provide green cards to foreigners who comply with the requirements associated with age, education, and English-speaking capabilities. In the past, the United States utilized an immigration policy that placed emphases on family reunification and employment-oriented immigration system, and towards a point-based system that focuses on the inclusion of immigrants with certain specified levels of education and employment qualifications and professional certifications. The administration has also previously recommended the implementation of immigration policies that deny immigrants’ entry to the United States or unlawful permanent residence if they are likely to utilize Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, and other kinds of public support. The current immigration policies are not making America great again. Instead, they are causing America to move against the values that made it great in the first place. The immigration policies have increased racial profiling, restricted people from practicing their liberty, and promoted unethical practices by the U.S. government.
Impact of New Immigration Policies on Increased Racial Profiling
The new immigration policies have promoted unfair profiling of certain racial, cultural, and ethnic groups. Profiling of minority ethnicities such as Latino/Latina and Asian communities has increased significantly. The Civil Rights Act 1964 discourages discrimination of people based on race and nationalities. The immigration system encourages profiling because it recommends denying green cards for immigrants who are from non-English speaking countries. The Trump administration roots for an immigration system that provides green cards only to immigrants who meet the requirements that are associated with education, age, as well as English speaking proficiencies (Krogstad & Gonzalez-Barrera, 2018). Trump’s immigration policies are built around developing a wall in the Mexican border to prevent illegal immigrants; to deport all of the estimated 12 million Mexican immigrants who are not legally authorized to live in the United States; and to ban Syrian refugees from entering the United States. Profiling of minority ethnicities such as Latino/Latina and Asian communities has increased significantly. The Civil Rights Act 1964 discourages discrimination of people based on race and nationalities. The immigration system encourages profiling because it recommends denying green cards for immigrants who are from non-English speaking countries. The Trump administration roots for an immigration system that provides green cards only to immigrants who meet the requirements that are associated with education, age, as well as English speaking proficiencies (Krogstad & Gonzalez-Barrera, 2018). Trump’s immigration policies are built around developing a wall in the Mexican border to prevent illegal immigrants; to deport all of the estimated 12 million Mexican immigrants who are not legally authorized to live in the United States; and to ban Syrian refugees from entering the United States. Furthermore, the Trump immigration policies seek to exclude all immigrants from Islamic nations from entering the country. Can U.S. officials restore order at the Southern border?

The number of Central American migrant families seeking asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border has surged to
historic levels, leading to overcrowding at migrant detention centers and reports of hungry children living in
filthy conditions at border stations. President Trump’s critics blame his immigration policies, including his efforts
to make it more difficult for migrants to win asylum. The president counters that Democratic lawmakers are at
fault for refusing to close loopholes in immigration law that he says allow many migrants to enter the country
without proper vetting. Administration officials have taken aggressive steps to deter migrants from traveling to
the border, largely by making it harder for them to win asylum, but courts have blocked some of those efforts.

Hispanic migrants, mostly from Central America, continue to overwhelm U.S. immigration facilities along the
border with Mexico, creating what federal officials describe as a humanitarian and border security crisis.
In June, immigration officials took 104,334 migrants into custody at the border, marking the fourth consecutive
month the number has topped 100,000. The number of migrants detained in June was 28 percent below the
144,278 taken into custody in May, which U.S. officials said reflects efforts by Mexico to crack down on
northward migration from Central America. May’s number was the highest monthly total since March 2006. It
encompassed 132,887 migrants who crossed the border without documents and 11,391 deemed inadmissible
at a U.S. port of entry. Honduran and Guatemalan families with children led the surge.
“We are bursting at the seams,” Randy Howe, executive director of operations at the U.S. Customs and Border
Protection’s (CPB) Office of Field Operations, said in June. “It’s unsustainable and this can’t continue.”
The surge has filled border detention centers beyond capacity and left U.S. officials struggling to meet
migrants’ medical needs. In June, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials ordered more than
5,000 adults quarantined after outbreaks of mumps and chickenpox at migrant detention facilities.

"Lifting the Corporate Veil" is a legal concept that refers to the judicial act of disregarding the separate legal personality of a corporation or limited liability company (LLC). Normally, a corporation is considered a legal entity separate from its shareholders or members, meaning that the personal assets of shareholders or members are protected from the liabilities of the corporation. - 2. US immigration and nationalization is a subject Americans has become increasingly active in discussing. A recent survey by the Public Religion Research Institute revealed that more Americans support the creation of a pathway that facilitates the naturalization of immigrants. Although 44 percent of senior citizens feel that immigrants threaten American customs and values, another 58 percent of them said the immigration system ought to allow them to become naturalized citizens — provided they meet certain requirements. The younger population (respondents ages 18 to 29) had a more welcoming attitude toward immigrants with 68 percent of the age group saying immigrants strengthen American society. Despite the positive sentiment among American citizens, however, low-income immigrants are still hesitant to apply for naturalization. Non-Monetary Factors Influencing Low-Income Immigrants' Response The persisting theory among immigration experts is that the increasing cost of applying for naturalization is the main deterrent for applying for naturalization (the naturalization fee has gone up from $680 in 2016 to $725 in 2018). A recent study led by Stanford University’s Immigration Policy Lab supports this theory.
- 3. After offering fee vouchers covering the cost of naturalization application, the researchers found that immigrants were 41 percent more likely to proceed and apply for citizenship. A closer look at the results reveals that immigrants are not just dealing with financial barriers but also other concerns. Examples are the lack of information and resources, insufficient guidance in answering application forms, and the worry that legal issues may emerge from their application. Assistance from Immigration Experts Needed The office of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is already addressing the concern about nationalization being too expensive for immigrants. From 2009, the USCIS has awarded $73 million to various organizations and states to help Green Card holders (immigrants with permanent residency status) achieve naturalization. This Citizenship and Assimilation Grant Program will continue until September 30, 2018. To address the non-financial barriers, permanent residents can seek help from organizations or immigration law offices. The latter can offer legal advice, help in preparing documentary requirements, and navigate the complexities of US immigration law.
