More than just information… Non-fiction Reader’s Advisory Mary A. Kelly Salem-South Lyon District Library South Lyon, MI [email_address]
Take the long view Think more about establishing a relationship Start a conversation… Everyone has a job, family, kids, etc Go with the moment or thought Embrace the junky, trashy and funky stuff Know your own holdings Have some ready to go!
You can judge a book by its cover! Leave books on your desk that have “eye appeal” Look for cover art that is bright and colorful Think about mood or tone, not just “topic” You don’t necesarily have to be interested in the subject matter Good writing or an interesting story can trump topic
Teens Simple /informative Too much information is overwhelming Remember fun and light Add a “creep out” factor, if possible Don’t emphasize reading-- use words like “look at this” or “browse”
Finding Items with Teen Potential Look for encyclopedia or magazine style layouts Less is more! Browsability Good photography/illustrations Good teen topics: Death, crazy people, show business/pop culture, animals, paranormal, medical mysteries, war, technology
Websites that embrace the weird (and can start conversations!) FARK.com ( warning! not always clean) Neatorama.com PointlessSites.com Oddee.com Snopes.com
Eye Catchers for your desk …let the conversations begin!
