A workshop imagining new possibilities for stewardship in congregations. A conversation about vision, language, rhetoric, and teaching. (Though, a bit incomplete without the commentary.)
This document discusses the cultural realities facing ministry today and the role of the pastor as a change agent. It notes that society has become post-national, post-rational, and post-Christian, shaped more by consumerism than the gospel. However, postmodern society seeks authenticity and community over superficial programs. The document argues that good ministry must be relational, focusing on pastoral health, community, discipleship, and service rather than administrative tasks. It emphasizes the need for pastors to admit their own failings and struggles in order to foster genuine dialogue and transformation.

Session 2 Equipping Church in Workplace Os Hillman
This document discusses equipping the church to engage in the workplace. It addresses fears and misconceptions between church and workplace leaders. The key points are:
1) Most church members do not feel their work is a spiritual calling or that they are equipped to live out their faith at work.
2) The local church should train believers to destroy the works of Satan, yet many function like a cruise liner rather than an aircraft carrier for spiritual warfare.
3) All believers, including those in the workplace, have important spiritual gifts and callings that can establish God's kingdom in the city if the church equips and commissions them.
Are you called to equip other workplace leaders? If so, Marketplace Leaders would like to partner with you to equip others. This webinar describes the tools available through Marketplace Leaders to equip the "church in the workplace."

Session 4 - Equipping the Church in the Workplace - Action PlansOs Hillman
This document outlines 25 action steps a church can take to equip believers for ministry in the workplace without starting a formal workplace ministry program. The steps include establishing a prayer team, preaching sermons on workplace topics, conducting a survey to understand how the church can support workplace believers, and inviting guest speakers. It also suggests reading workplace-focused books, allowing testimonies from believers, and integrating workplace teachings into existing ministries. The overall goal is to mobilize the entire congregation for workplace outreach and affirm each believer's calling in their vocation.
Session 1 Equipping the Church in the WorkplaceOs Hillman
This document discusses equipping Christians for ministry in the workplace. It begins by introducing the author Os Hillman and his role as a pastor to over 150,000 people across 104 countries through daily 2-minute sermons. It then discusses how the modern church often fails to equip believers for their daily work, which was a major focus of Jesus' and Paul's ministries. The bulk of the document examines biblical concepts of work, tracing distortions around sacred vs secular work back to the 4th and 12th centuries. It argues that all work can be ministry and worship when done with excellence for God rather than men. The document aims to shift perspectives on the importance and spiritual nature of the workplace as the primary location where Christians interact with

Diocese of London Lent Appeal 2015. Who inspired you when you were younger?diolondon
Our Lent Appeal this year asks the question: 'Who inspired you when you were younger to become the person you are today?'
You might make an opportunity to share your answers in your prayer or study groups or other church groups, giving thanks to God.
Practically, the goal of our Lent Appeal is to fund additional youth, children and family workers to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to serve their communities.
We are raising funds for the Bishop of London’s Mission Fund, which is looking to support children, youth and family projects across the Diocese and who will be investing at least £1 million over the next three years in order to realise this goal.
Global migration is happening at an unprecedented rate, with over 200 million migrants worldwide. This has resulted in over 150 unreached people groups now living in North Carolina alone. The document advocates discovering these people groups through their community institutions like markets and salons. This discovery then naturally leads to engagement, where relationships can be formed by being honest about wanting to share the gospel. The goal is to go to these groups in their communities rather than isolating them, make disciples, and plant churches to reach these groups with the gospel.
This document outlines a 5-session adult Sunday school class on Christian stewardship. Session 3 focuses on "Loving Our Neighbor" and how to effectively care for those in need without causing harm. It discusses the importance of responding to human suffering with discernment and compassion, looking for effective ways to help that promote self-sufficiency over dependency. The session explores biblical passages about caring for the poor and needy, discusses challenges like encouraging work over idleness, and challenges participants to become more aware of those in need in their own communities.
The pastoral letter calls for the Catholic laity in the Philippines to wake up from passivity and share responsibility for the Church with priests. It recommends cultivating a fresh sense of co-responsibility between clergy and laity, with priests being more open to sharing responsibilities and exploring ways for clergy and laity to work together respectfully. The laity are urged to no longer remain tied just to tasks within the Church, but to apply Gospel values to transforming society in areas like politics and business that require systemic renewal.
This document discusses how Christians today can reject Jesus in the same way he was rejected during crucifixion. It suggests that by preferring worldly things over spiritual things, trying to fit in with peers, avoiding responsibility, and pride, people today can effectively crucify Jesus again. However, it notes that by being crucified with Christ, openly confessing him, being united with him, and serving righteousness, readers can change their current approach to rejecting Jesus.
Liberalism fellowshiphallsandentertainmentMichael Smith
This document discusses the liberal view of fellowship halls and entertainment in the church. It argues that these practices are not authorized by scripture and divert the church's focus from its spiritual mission. Key points are that Jesus wants unity through truth, not social activities, and the church's purpose is saving souls rather than entertainment. The conclusion is that fellowship halls and such entertainment divide Christians where Christ wants unity.
Session 5 - Media, Arts and EntertainmentOs Hillman
The document discusses the influence of media and arts & entertainment in shaping culture. It notes that while the industry can promote both good and evil, God is working to raise up Christian change agents within Hollywood. Examples are given of recent productions and public figures that have used the platform to glorify God, despite the challenging spiritual environment of the industry. The media's role in cultural issues is also examined.
Bo Sanchez is a best-selling author, entrepreneur, preacher, and lay minister in the Philippines known as the "Preacher in Blue Jeans." He discusses various topics related to making, keeping, and using money wisely based on biblical principles. Some of the key points he makes include: having the right mindset and understanding that money itself is not important but what you become through earning it; the importance of competency in financial literacy; and that how one handles their money reveals their true character. He also emphasizes giving generously as the key to wealth and blessings.
This series is designed to provoke interest and encourage analysis on the methodologies we deploy when inviting (potential) church members to assist in their (new or continuous) growth as believers in Christ. While this series is introductory, it can serve as a refresher for long-time Christian believers. The material can also help non-members understand why Christians believe church is an essential component of a believer’s journey. And if nothing else…. It’ll help us understand why inviting people to church can feel so dang hard! .. And hopefully overcome this feeling.
This document outlines the agenda for a Church Stewardship Summit on growing church giving. The summit will feature several presenters discussing topics such as the state of church giving, common myths about giving, and how church leaders can create a culture of generosity. Steve McSwain will kick off the summit discussing the role of leaders in cultivating a generous congregation. Other presenters will address replacing traditional pledge drives with year-round stewardship and emphasizing generosity over tithing. The full-day event aims to equip church leaders with strategies for increasing congregational giving.
This document discusses the theme of mercy according to Catholic teachings. It explores how Jesus revealed God's mercy through his life and ministry, showing compassion to the poor, outcasts, sick and suffering. Mercy involves feeling responsible for others' wellbeing. The Church is called to practice mercy by welcoming all and bearing the struggles of others with hope. It encourages readers to reflect on how they can become more merciful in their communities and ministries.
This document summarizes a learning session on alternative dues models presented by Rabbi Dan Judson. It provides information on 13 congregations that have eliminated mandatory dues in favor of a voluntary contribution system. Reasons for the change included financial pressures, aligning with Jewish values of voluntary giving, and removing barriers to entry. Benefits discussed include improved community culture, more accurate budgeting, and increased revenue even from families previously receiving dues reductions. The system works by asking members for annual pledges to support the synagogue without categories or oversight. A case study found modest increases in membership and revenue after switching to this model.

What is tithing? New Testament Scholar Dr. David A. Croteau , after spending countless hours in researching about tithing presents - Introduction to tithing.
Dr. Croteau did dissertation in tithing!
The document examines tithing in the Old and New Testaments. Under the Law of Moses, tithing served two purposes: 1) To support a holiday festival where Israelites would celebrate with food from their harvest. 2) Every third year, the entire tithe was given to the poor. However, tithing was not an automatic 10% tax, and in the first two years Israelites consumed the tithe themselves. The document argues that tithing was a voluntary practice for Abraham and Jacob, not a requirement, and that Christians are not bound by Jewish laws on tithing from the Old Testament.

What Does The Bible Say About Christian Giving?
Is Tithing For The Church?
Answering Questions About Christian Giving
Christian Giving, Tithing, Tithes, Tithe, Gifts
1. Tithing rates among church attendees are very low, with the average person giving only 2.38% of their income to their church.
2. Research shows that only 4% of Americans give 10% or more of their income to churches, despite the biblical model of tithing being 10% of one's income.
3. The document discusses "The 33 Laws of Stewardship" which are spiritual principles for faithful giving and ownership, including that everything truly belongs to God, generous giving is rewarded, and obedience stems from love.
The document discusses the history and practice of tithing. It notes that many ancient countries had a form of tithing as a tax. Tithing is first mentioned in the Bible with Abraham and was later commanded under Mosaic law, though the Israelites sometimes neglected it. In Jesus' time it had become a legalistic ritual. The New Testament does not command Christians to give 10% and early Christians saw tithing as part of the Old Covenant. For Christians, giving should be motivated by love rather than law and done joyfully according to what one has received from God.

Proper Tithing to receive the promised BlessingsStanley Tan
The document discusses the biblical principle of tithing based on passages from Malachi 3:6-12. It states that Christians rob God when they do not give their tithes and offerings. Proper tithing involves giving 10% of one's gross income to support the church and its workers. In return, God promises to bless believers financially, protect them from pests and plagues, make their land delightful, and give them a good testimony. The conclusion encourages committing to proper tithing to receive God's promised blessings.

Hoa1 lecture 6 early christian architectureCarla Faner
This document provides an overview of Early Christian architecture from 300-600 AD. It discusses the key influences including geographical, geological, climatic, religious, social and historical factors. The predominant architectural form was the basilica, modeled on Roman basilicas. Early Christian buildings utilized salvaged materials from pagan temples and incorporated old Roman architectural elements. Interior mosaic and fresco ornamentation became prominent decorative features. The style was transitional, influenced by both Roman architecture and new religious needs, lacking distinctive structural innovations.
Comparison between early christian and byzantine architectureNguyễn Việt
Early Christian architecture emerged in the 3rd-7th centuries CE as Christianity gained prominence in the Western Roman Empire. Churches were modeled after Roman basilicas with flat roofs. Byzantine architecture developed later between 330-1453 CE in the Eastern Roman Empire after the capital moved to Constantinople. Byzantine churches had central, domed plans and decorative mosaics. They combined Roman traditions with Eastern influences like domes supported by pendentives. Mosaics depicted Christian figures and symbols and emphasized the relationship between church and imperial patronage in the Byzantine Empire.
The document discusses the doctrine of tithing and Christian giving. It begins by outlining arguments against requiring Christians to tithe, such as evidence that tithing in the Old Testament referred only to agricultural produce and not income, and historical evidence that many Christian thinkers rejected tithing as binding. It then discusses reconstructing a model of generous but not obligatory giving for Christians based on their resources being at God's disposal. The document provides extensive historical evidence against tithing being a requirement.
The document discusses the importance of how Christians handle money and give generously. It emphasizes that pastors must lead by example in their own giving and challenge their congregations to give beyond just tithing. When church leaders and members excel in generous giving out of gratitude for God's grace, it can transform the church's impact and bring joy.

Paul wrote to the Corinthians to encourage them to follow through on their previous commitment to provide an offering to help believers in Jerusalem who were experiencing poverty. A year ago, the Corinthians had eagerly agreed to collect funds, but had since failed to complete the task due to becoming distracted by internal issues in their church. Paul reminded them of the example set by the churches in Macedonia who had generously given despite their own humble means. He urged the Corinthians to finalize their gift as promised so it would be given freely rather than begrudgingly. Paul wanted to avoid any embarrassment if he arrived with other believers to find the Corinthians unprepared to provide the offering they had earlier agreed to give.
This document discusses various options for churches to establish adoption funds, including creating their own 501c3 organization, managing funds internally, or partnering with an existing organization like Lifesong. Partnering provides flexibility for the church's involvement level, allows funds to be set up quickly, and handles administrative tasks like qualifying families and disbursing funds with no cost to the church or deductions from donations. This "win-win-win" approach allows churches to actively support adoption ministry while removing financial barriers for families and finding homes for orphaned children.

“The Lord’s church in an 'Experience Driven Culture'” - [John 6:60-69] - As churches decline in membership, they begin to compromise to sustain numbers - Many churches have adopted the "market driven" approach – i.e., Find out what people want and give it to them - WHAT EVER THAT IS! — Many churches of Christ are dondoinge the same things! Can the church fight apathy and materialism by feeding people's carnal appetites? Has the word of God lost it’s power & effectiveness? What should the churches response be to the populace and its increasing hunger for an “experience” & disinterest in the truth? - MP3 / PPT / KEYNOTE / PDF - 5/17/2015
This document discusses the principle of tithing and its benefits. It argues that tithing opens one up to greater prosperity and abundance by aligning with universal spiritual laws. Regularly giving 10% of one's income is suggested to see tangible returns in unexpected financial windfalls and opportunities. Personal stories are shared of people who experienced miraculous results, such as unexpected job offers or discounts, after committing to tithing. The overall message is that tithing is an ancient spiritual principle that still works today to bless those who practice it with wealth and fulfillment.
This document provides information about upcoming events at the First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood including a Fall Kick-Off Luncheon, Hispanic Heritage celebration, Trunk or Treat event, and encouragement to join the church choir. It outlines the church's leadership and provides the schedule of worship services and sermon topics for upcoming Sundays in September.
The document discusses Lifesong, an organization that mobilizes churches to support orphans through adoption, care, and financial support. It outlines Lifesong's mission to bring joy and purpose to orphans through engaging the entire church community. Lifesong pledges to ensure orphaned children have their basic needs met and receive Christian training, education, and lifelong support. The document then provides details on Lifesong's various orphan care and adoption funding programs in multiple countries.

Astronism, Cosmism and Cosmodeism: the space religions espousing the doctrine...Cometan
This lecture created by Brandon Taylorian (aka Cometan) specially for the CESNUR Conference held Bordeaux in June 2024 provides a brief introduction to the legacy of religious and philosophical thought that Astronism emerges from, namely the discourse on transcension started assuredly by the Cosmists in Russia in the mid-to-late nineteenth century and then carried on and developed by Mordecai Nessyahu in Cosmodeism in the twentieth century. Cometan also then provides some detail on his story in founding Astronism in the early twenty-first century from 2013 along with details on the central Astronist doctrine of transcension. Finally, the lecture concludes with some contributions made by space religions and space philosophy and their influences on various cultural facets in art, literature and film.

Lição 12: João 15 a 17 – O Espírito Santo e a Oração Sacerdotal | 2° Trimestr...OmarBarrezueta1

The Book of Revelation, filled with symbolic and apocalyptic imagery, presents one of its most striking visions in Revelation 9:3-12—the locust army. Understanding the significance of this locust army provides insight into the broader themes of divine judgment, protection, and the ultimate triumph of God’s will as depicted in Revelation.

Introduction
Mantra Yoga is an exact science. "Mananat trayate iti mantrah- by the Manana (constant thinking or recollection) of which one is protected or is released from the round of births and deaths, is Mantra." That is called Mantra by the meditation (Manana) on which the Jiva or the individual soul attains freedom from sin, enjoyment in heaven and final liberation, and by the aid of which it attains in full the fourfold fruit (Chaturvarga), i.e., Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha. A Mantra is so called because it is achieved by the mental process.

Lucid Dreaming: Understanding the Risks and Benefits
The ability to control one's dreams or for the dreamer to be aware that he or she is dreaming. This process, called lucid dreaming, has some potential risks as well as many fascinating benefits. However, many people are hesitant to try it initially for fear of the potential dangers. This article aims to clarify these concerns by exploring both the risks and benefits of lucid dreaming.
The Benefits of Lucid Dreaming
Lucid dreaming allows a person to take control of their dream world, helping them overcome their fears and eliminate nightmares. This technique is particularly useful for mental health. By taking control of their dreams, individuals can face challenging scenarios in a controlled environment, which can help reduce anxiety and increase self-confidence.
Addressing Common Concerns
Physical Harm in Dreams Lucid dreaming is fundamentally safe. In a lucid dream, everything is a creation of your mind. Therefore, nothing in the dream can physically harm you. Despite the vividness and realness of the dream experience, it remains entirely within your mental landscape, posing no physical danger.
Mental Health Risks Concerns about developing PTSD or other mental illnesses from lucid dreaming are unfounded. As soon as you wake up, it's clear that the events experienced in the dream were not real. On the contrary, lucid dreaming is often seen as a therapeutic tool for conditions like PTSD, as it allows individuals to reframe and manage their thoughts.
Potential Risks of Lucid Dreaming
While generally safe, lucid dreaming does come with a few risks as well:
Mixing Dream Memories with Reality Long-term lucid dreamers might occasionally confuse dream memories with real ones, creating false memories. This issue is rare and preventable by maintaining a dream journal and avoiding lucid dreaming about real-life people or places too frequently.
Escapism Using lucid dreaming to escape reality can be problematic if it interferes with your daily life. While it is sometimes beneficial to escape and relieve the stress of reality, relying on lucid dreaming for happiness can hinder personal growth and productivity.
Feeling Tired After Lucid Dreaming Some people report feeling tired after lucid dreaming. This tiredness is not due to the dreams themselves but often results from not getting enough sleep or using techniques that disrupt sleep patterns. Taking breaks and ensuring adequate sleep can prevent this.
Mental Exhaustion Lucid dreaming can be mentally taxing if practiced excessively without breaks. It’s important to balance lucid dreaming with regular sleep to avoid mental fatigue.
Lucid dreaming is safe and beneficial if done with caution. It has many benefits, such as overcoming fear and improving mental health, and minimal risks. There are many resources and tutorials available for those interested in trying it.

No More Tithing: Inspiring New Language and Practices for Giving
1. No More Tithing
Inspiring New Language &
Practices for Giving
Adam J. Copeland - @ajc123
Center for Stewardship Leaders
Luther Seminary

3. What’s my point?
Proposal: the language and approach to
“tithing” employed by many churches is at best,
misunderstood, and at worst, biblically suspect.
Either way, it’s likely ineffective. Therefore, the
church should explore new language,
motivations, and practices to encourage
financial gifts.
5. Mini History of American Stewardship
• William Avery, Stewardship of Life Institute,
Lutheran Theological Seminary, Gettysburg, PA
• Founding to approx. 1830s rent/sell pews,
subscription list, raffles, suppers & socials,
“haphazard”
6. Mini History of American Stewardship
• 1919 new “duplex” envelope system!
• One to receive “the dues for church membership”
• Another in a different color for “other Christian
purposes”
• The word “stewardship” proliferated between
1900-1920
7. Mini History of American Stewardship
• b/w WWI & WWII stewardship declined
• Renewed emphasis post WWII
tithe/stewardship as response to God’s grace
• While popular, it failed to become internalized
for the vast majority of churchgoers
8. Mini History of American Stewardship
• 1980s onward moving from stewardship
focused on institutional church to justice,
peace, environment
• Today, stewardship awfully confused…
– not meaningful concept for most members
– strongly connected to finances
– Many critical topics avoided
11. Tithing
How have you
experienced the
word tithing at
some point in
your past?
How is the word
or concept of
tithing present in
your ministry
today?
12.
13.
14.
15. “Tithing has been tested thousands of times in
the laboratory of human experience. What is the
verdict? With very few exceptions, people who
have tried tithing heartily recommend it to
others, and they, themselves, have no desire to
give it up…To the tither, it simply becomes a
natural thing to do.”
–Luther Powell (qtb Mark Allan Powell)
16. Powell: Giving to God
• In the Bible, tithes given away and different
from support of local synagogue
• Trouble of analogies between times
• Ultimately, though, we life in a time of
incredible affluence
17. Powell: Giving to God
“Would I like to be the sort of person who is
spiritually and financially able to give 10% of my
income to the church?”
If the answer is “yes” then there’s a good chance
tithing is for you.
18.
19. Lansdell
“All must allow that tithe-paying was enjoined
upon the Jews, by God, in the law; and we all
content that Jesus Christ, as a Jew, kept that law
to the letter; therefore the inference seems
inevitable (and we have found not a tittle of
evidence to the contrary) that the Lord Jesus
Himself paid tithes.” p. 125
20. Lansdell
“Right giving is a part of right living.
The living is not right when the giving is wrong.
The giving is wrong when we steal
God’s portion to spend on ourselves.” p. 148
21.
22. Benefits of Tithing
• Clear and
straightforward
• References scripture
• Avoids awkwardness
about “how much”
• Tithers love it
• Consistent reminder of
God the giver
• Transforms lives
• Connection with other
Christians
• 80/20 rule
26. 80 / 20 rule
In most congregations, around 80%
of the financial giving comes from
20% of the members.
27. Every church has a financial stewardship
culture. The question becomes how that
culture is developed and sustained.
-
How would you describe your
congregation’s financial stewardship
culture?
29. Deut. 14:25-26
“With the money secure in hand, go to the place
that the LORD your God will choose; spend the
money for whatever you wish—oxen, sheep,
wine, strong drink, or whatever you desire. And
you shall eat there in the presence of
the LORD your God, you and your household
rejoicing together.”
31. “As a requirement for
faithful living, tithing
does not meet high
standards of biblical
interpretation.” (55)
32. Iona Community
Accountability
Our Rule binds us to mutual accountability. We
aim to be fully transparent and accountable for
our use of money and time, and to operate with
ethical codes of conduct.
34. Older Paradigm
• Giving out of religious
obligation or moral
duty
• Giving is contribution
or donation
• Institutions are
autonomous
• Americans have a
tendency not to discuss
giving habits (Wuthnow)
• Giving out of personal
choice (result of
cultivation)
• Giving is creating change,
powering a vision
• Donors are collaborative
partners
• Sharing giving decisions
with others encouraged
Emerging Paradigm
Slide with credit and gratitude to the Lake Family Institute on Faith & Giving; modifications made
35. Older Paradigm
• Institutions are to be
trusted
• Theology of duty
• Budgets need-driven
• Financial focus in
insular
• Different from business
Emerging Paradigm
• Institution trust must be
earned
• Theology of grace
• Giving is mission and
values-driven
• Financial focus is
outward/global
• Influenced by and/or
embraces business
principles
Slide with credit and gratitude to the Lake Family Institute on Faith & Giving; modifications made
36. What if?
• Churches addressed money year-round, and
when we aren’t asking for it?
• New “tithe” = 5% to church + 5% to charity?
• Spoke about financial giving holistically?
• Electronic giving became normative?
• Took the offering out of worship?
40. ‘With what shall I come before the LORD,
and bow myself before God on high?
Shall I come before him with burnt-offerings,
with calves a year old?
Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams,
with tens of thousands of rivers of oil?
Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression,
the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?’
He has told you, O mortal, what is good;
and what does the LORD require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God? -Micah 6:6-8
41. Stewardship is not therefore the gaining of
influence, power, property . . . but rather the care
and nurture of life, the healing of the one who fell
amongst thieves, the feeding of the hungry and
freeing of the oppressed, the befriending of the
friendless, the equitable distribution of earth’s
bounty, the passion for justice and peace, and
dialogue with all who hunger and thirst for
authenticity.
-Douglas John Hall
According to United Presbyterian GA Minutes, Hubbard Press spend nearly half their operating expenses producing envelopes in 1920; established “Stewardship Enrollment Sunday” Feb 20, 1921
Not generally about “stewardship” tho, more specifically about “tithing.”
