12 Fallacies of Belief
Often Held by the Church

Fallacy #1:
There is a God-ordained
spiritual hierarchy in calling.
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as
working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that
you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a
reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”
Col. 3:23,24

Fallacy #2:
A workplace believer’s primary role
is to fund the church’s ministry.
God has created each person with unique talents and
gifts to build the Kingdom of God.

Fallacy #3:
The profit motive is evil.
God has created each person with unique talents and
gifts to build the Kingdom of God.
Then David spoke to the men who stood by him,
saying, “What shall be done for the man who kills this
Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel?”

ministry in the world

Fallacy #4:
Ministry is primarily what takes
place in the 4 walls of the local church.
“For where two or three are gathered together in My
name, I am there in the midst of them.” Matt 18:20

and secular.”

Fallacy #5:
Workplace ministry is an
evangelism program to executives.
“For by Him all things were created that are in heaven
and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether
thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All
things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And
He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.”
Col. 1:16,17

self-inflicted put-down
is ‘I am not a pastor—
I am a layperson.’
This is all part of a clever
Satanic scheme to
neutralize apostles, prophets,
evangelists, pastors and
teachers, along with the
entire army of disciples,
already positioned in the
marketplace.”

Fallacy #6:
The five-fold ministry is primarily reserved for
those in full-time vocational ministry.
“And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some
prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and
teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of
ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all
come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of
the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the
stature of the fullness of Christ;”

Fallacy #7:
Planting churches in the workplace will take money
and resources away from the local church
“And my God shall supply all your need according to
His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” – Phil 4:19

Fallacy #8:
Workplace ministry is another program that must
be managed by the pastor.
He must endorse but a champion is required in every
congregation to manage it.

Fallacy #9:
I am already equipping my people
to be effective in their workplace.
Ask your people if they feel they are being equipped to
live out their faith at work.

Fallacy #10:
Pastors have the inside track on spiritual truth.
In some cases that may be true but it is not always the
case. Consider Jeremiah Lanphier, D.L. Moody, R.G.
LeTournea.

Fallacy #11:
Workplace believers are difficult to motivate in
spiritual things because they are consumed with
worldly matters.
In some cases that may be true. In other cases there
are leaders more passionate than many pastors.

created to busy themselves

sacrifice is more pleasing
to God than when each
one attends to his calling
and studies well to
live for the common

Fallacy #12:
We can do ”church” the same way we’ve always
done it. This is just another fad.

times, to know what Israel ought to do.”

“You see at the moment people
come to me on a Sunday and
they’re saying, ‘Feed me up,
fill me up, bandage me up—
make me ready for another
week out there.’ And in a way
it’s a constant drain. But if they
really saw their work
and workplace as a context
for ministry then they’d
be coming back to the church
feeding us and filling us
with all the stories of
what God has been doing out
there…The whole church
would be being refueled, not
drained.”
