JIMSharePoint Composer is a product we currently have in Beta, due to ship in early October. Composer allows you to design your 2007 or 2010 SharePoint deployment visually on a ‘mind-mapping’ type of canvas.Composer’s companion tool, Maestro, can be used to generate a map from an existing SharePoint deployment which can be used for documentation, governance, and upgrade planning. We’ll be taking a look at Maestro in the next demo.Composer also includes some great validation logic for your maps. Prior to deployment, both Composer and Maestro can inspect the design and point out any configuration issues that might have been overlooked. The validation tool also provides best practice advice from experts in the field.By providing a holistic view of your planned or existing SharePoint implementation, Composer is a great tool for Architects, Admins, Auditors, Consultants and anyone who needs to see the ‘big picture’. Maps can easily be shared with all the players involved in planning, deploying, maintaining and monitoring the SharePoint deployment.
JIM
JIMWhile Composer provides the design and document scenario, Maestro is where the magic really happens. As mentioned previously, Maestro can be used to crawl an existing farm and generate a map you can open in Composer. For both new deployments and modifications to existing deployments, Maestro will take the configuration developed in Composer and make it real. Behind the scenes, Maestro leverages the strengths of PowerShell scripting for SharePoint. PowerShell is now the recommended tool for automated SharePoint configuration and maintenance but with Maestro you don’t have to first learn everything about PowerShell before deploying.Since Maestro handles all the grunt work of a scripted SharePoint deployment, all based on your predetermined configuration, repeating the process across multiple environments like Dev, QA, Staging and Production is very easy. While you could use the SharePoint Configuration Wizard, Farm Configuration Wizard and the Central Admin Interface to configure your SharePoint implementation, Maestro (along with a good Composer map) allows you to collect ALL the answers up front, even for questions the Wizards don’t ask (database names for example).
