NICHOLAS MARTENS
G R A P H I C D E S I G N E R
My name is Nicholas Martens and I’m a graphic designer. My style
is influenced by classic and minimalistic ideas. Mixing those two
usually produces sustainable work that has a lasting style. There
were times where a modernistic approach had to be used or I
had to do an illustration but that’s no problem for me because
I had an eclectic education. To me being creative is attaching a
picture of a puppy to an email so the receiver will remember me.
I’m a concept oriented person. I
like consistency. I’m resourceful,
innovative and usually silly.
I’m always brainstorming and
thinking because I can’t turn it
off which is why I have so many
notebooks with random ideas/
sketches.
Skilled in: Adobe Creative
Suite, Illustration, Typography,
Custom Fonts, Layout,
Marketing, Advertising,
Branding, Problem Solving &
Concept Creation.

Parkville Coffeehouse: 2014-Present
Freelance Graphic Design
I’ve done various projects for Parkville Coffee
Including their: Coffee labels, printed menu,
collaboration blend labels & retail/promotional
materials.
Sporting Kansas City 9/2013-12/2013
Graphic Design Intern
Sporting Kansas City was an awesome internship.
Sure it was unpaid but you got to meet some
really cool creatives there and some SKC player
(Jimmy, Collins and Benny). My internship there
was mostly random little projects like a new
twitter background or a logo for and affiliate
organization. The coolest project I did was the
SKC player cards, which they still use today. I
kind of freaked out a bit when I got a signed one
From Benny Feilhaber and realized they were the
ones I made.
Sosland Publishing 6/2014-Present
Special Projects Designer
I started at Sosland Publishing on June 16,
2014. It’s my first “grown up” job I’ve ever had
so it was like entering a new world. They hired
me as a Special Projects Designer which had
me designing random features, Illustrations,
Directories and infographics for some of their
magazines. I also design two of their quarterly
publications Snack World and Panaderia.
This is the most I’ve ever used InDesign too so
it’s pumped my skills a lot. Illustrator is still my
favorite and strong skill but InDesign skills are
still very helpful.
The whole environment of a publishing company
is detailed, fast paced and very thorough. The
workflow is different from what friends have told
me about and agency style. There are lulls in
publishing that speed up out of nowhere.
I’ve also been trained to preflight when our
digital specialist is gone so leaning to dissect
a bad ad and search for low res images and
making sure it fits bleed marks has become
second nature to me.
