2. In 2015, I was asked by the
NJBA board to work on developing the
organization’s website.
To get ideas about what kinds of information
we might put on the website, I looked at the
websites of several other state band
associations including New York, Texas,
California and Indiana.

3. I found that most of these are large,
big-budget organizations that host
a wide range of band and music education
events throughout the year, primarily geared
toward professional band directors.
Their websites are dedicated to
paid membership-oriented services,
much like NJMEA in New Jersey.

of some of these state band associations.

5. Currently, NJBA is a small-scale organization
with limited resources that sponsors
a few high-quality projects each year.
Recent examples of these projects include
the New Jersey State Band Gala,
the Intercollegiate Wind Ensemble
and the Wind Band Academy.

6. While these are all very worthwhile
activities, the number of individuals
they serve is rather limited,
given that the name of the organization,
“New Jersey Band Association,”
is very inclusive.

7. After studying a number of statewide band
association websites, I concluded the following:
1) NJMEA is currently providing most
of the programs and services that
the large statewide band associations
are providing in their states.
2) NJBA is inherently organized as a small
organization, due to the time limitations of its
members and lack of administrative resources.

8. 3) To become more inclusive and provide
more services and outreach to a larger
number of constituents, NJBA can make
its website a resource for band directors
and music students at all levels.

9. With input and direction
from the NJBA executive board
and volunteer efforts
from selected band directors,
(and possibly some college
music education students)
this goal could be accomplished over time
with a minimum amount of expense.

10. A variety of educational resources could be
posted on the NJBA website, selected from an
enormously wide range of “open-source”
musical and instructional materials.
“Open-source” is a term used to describe
materials that are currently already
freely available on the internet,
most of which are in the public domain.

11. Open-source educational materials could be
compiled, excerpted, linked or embedded
on the NJBA website, making the website
a valuable resource for hundreds of music
teachers and thousands of students.
In addition, the NJBA website could publish
its own original open-source materials,
created by qualified volunteers
as an ongoing activity.
