The safety of Nimesulide has been reported before as well. In conclusion, Nimesulide has better antipyretic effect in children in the doses used in the study and appears to be safe for use in them.
1. Nimesulide for fever
Nimesulide is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) drug which has been found to be
useful in the treatment of fever.
A double-blind, crossover clinical trial was carried out in subjects with fever, to assess the
activity of three antipyretic drugs. Eighteen in-patients with body temperature (axillary)
above 38 degrees C were given a single dose of nimesulide 100 mg, acetylsalicylic acid
500 mg, and dipyrone 500 mg, orally according to an incomplete balanced block design.
Significant improvement was recorded with nimesulide and dipyrone, which gave similar
results.
Acetylsalicylic acid normalized body temperature in a few patients. Safety was very
satisfactory. No local or systemic side-effects were noted.
Clinical studies of Nimesulide in treating children with fever have been carried out. In the
children receiving Nimesulide, it took 8.6h to reach normal temperature. The mean
decrease in temperature for each cycle was slightly higher for the Nimesulide group.
The drugs were well tolerated by the children.
No side effects were reported in any child.
Nimesulide acted more rapidly in bringing down the temperature to normal.
Nimesulide appears to exert its effects also through a variety of other mechanisms and
involves interference with the production action of mediators other than prostaglandins
such as enzymes, toxic oxygen derivatives, cytokines, platelet activating factor and
histamine.
