Nicolas Copernicus was born in 1473 in Poland and was the youngest of three children. He studied multiple languages including Latin, German, Polish, Greek and Italian and obtained his education from the University of Padua in Italy. Copernicus challenged the existing view that the Earth was the center of the universe and died in 1543, about two months after publishing his book that advanced the theory that the Sun, not the Earth, is at the center of the solar system.

2. The Early Life Nicolas Copernicus was born in 1473 on 19 th February. He had two sisters and one brother. He was the youngest in his family.

3. The Languages His Polish name was Mikolaj Kopernik. Copernicus knew many languages. He knew Latin,German, Polish,Greek and Italian.

4. Astronomy In his day most astronomers believed that the Earth was the centre of the universe. The astronomers thought the Earth stayed still.

5. University of Padua Copernicus studied in Italy at the University of Padua. He studied for two years in that university. He was there from 1501 to 1503.

6. Returning to Poland He returned to Poland to take his church position.

7. Copernicus' Death Copernicus died on 24 th May 1543. He died about two months after his book was printed.
