Next week you will submit Part 2 of your course project and it will be used to cover the content from Unit 4 and Unit 5. An updated draft of the project covering Units 1-5 is due for review, and feedback will be provided to further guide you through the final project. To add to your project, take a virtual trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City (see your resources for a link)! Navigate their site and search for an artifact from their Early Christian/Byzantine collections. Choose an item (or items if you want to explore more than one!), and write a short essay about it. Observe its traits, identify the origin, and interpret its execution and symbolism in regards to the time’s artistic tendencies and religious trends. Illustrate your knowledge of the art by evaluating an artifact of your liking! Don't forget to add images to your PowerPoint presentation from this virtual trip and to incorporate the art from Unit 4 as well! This is due by end of day Sunday in Unit 5. Your signature assignment is due. The student will analyze a work of art that connects to his or her career field. That work of art can be a painting, a type of music, a film, or any other type of art that we have covered in this course.
Grading and Assessment for Signature Assignment Final Draft
The final draft of the paper will be graded based on the rubric provided below.

. Each member of your three-person team will need to bring a certain skill set (not Liam Neeson's) to the table to complete it. This will require both individual and group work. Each group member will be given a task he or she must complete on their own, but must add to the finished product.
The bulk of your project grade will be determined on the quality of your own contribution. The remainder will consist of an evaluation of your entire group project, your ability to meet deadlines and maintain communication through your group discussion boards, and assessments completed by your group members regarding your input.
Museum Project – Group Member positions
Position #1: The Archeologist
This person must find images or videos of the artifacts, primary source documents, etc. that you want to present as a part of the exhibition. This person will also need to supply some basic facts about the object (who, what, when, and where). He or she will need to run it by the other team members for approval before deciding whether or not to add it to the exhibit. He or she may also need to build replicas of some artifacts for display (i.e. an exhibit on the Industrial Revolution might have a telegraph or electromagnet demonstration), and may call on Team Members 2 and 4 for some assistance
.Finally, this person will assist in developing the exhibit introduction which Team Member 2 will be drafting.
Position #2: The Researcher/Exhibitionist
This person will need to write a short blurb about each agreed-upon object/image that uses the basic facts provided by Team Member 1, and then explains the significance of it to explaining the exhibition's topic, using outside scholarly sources to write the blurbs. This person may be recruited to help in any replica constructions for the exhibit.This person will largely be responsible for also writing an introduction to the exhibit, which explains it as a whole (will receive input from Team Members 1 and 3).
Position #3: The Marketing Analyst
This person will be in charge of design, layout, and marketing for the exhibition. This person will need to craft the images and content found by Team Members 1 and 2 onto an aesthetically pleasing website that will both inform and draw visitors. Visit some museums and/or museum websites to get a feel for what works well. Do some research into museum marketing/administration.Additionally, this person will create a map that helps visitors navigate the exhibit. He or she will also need to craft a short press release describing the exhibition to be published in the local paper.Finally, this person will assist in developing the exhibit introduction which Team Member 2 will be drafting.

A museum exhibition consists of a carefully selected group of art objects that illuminates a specific artistic, cultural, or historical theme. It can explore the development of a single artist’s work (e.g. “The Prints of Albrecht Dürer”), reveal a range of artistic activity from a given time and place (e.g. “High Renaissance Artists in Rome under Pope Julius II”), or chart the depiction of a certain subject throughout history (e.g. “Images of War in the 20th Century”). Much like an academic paper, an effective exhibition makes an argument, using works of art as evidence for its thesis. Furthermore, an exhibition creates meaning through the arrangement of works of art in space. By sequencing works in a certain way, the exhibition’s organizer, or curator, structures the viewer’s understanding of the its subject.
This assignment asks you to create your own art exhibition devoted to a topic of your choosing, consisting of at least four works of art. Unlike your museum paper, this paper does require library research. Your final paper should have the following format:
I. Introductory paragraph: Introduce your reader to your exhibition’s topic. Describe its historical significance (in other words, why was this exhibition worth organizing? what can be learned from seeing it?) and state your thesis.
II. Checklist: Write at least two paragraphs for each work of art in your exhibition. Each entry in your checklist should contain a short formal analysis of the work and describe how it relates to your thesis. Consider how the sequencing of works in your exhibition affects the development of your argument.
III. Conclusion: This paragraph should not simply restate your thesis. What have we learned from your exhibition? What were the consequences of the works you have chosen? How do these works point to future art historical developments?

1) Email me ([email protected]) with a potential topic by Wednesday, November 6th. You are not bound to this topic, but it is important to start thinking about this early, so that you can begin searching for sources during our library session.

VISUAL ANALYSIS PAPER
One of the more traditional assignments that students encounter in an introductory Art
History class is to go to a museum to observe an object(s) and write a paper that details its stylistic
features. Since the Lowe Art Museum on the University of Miami campus has a very fine
collection of Renaissance to Rococo paintings, select one painting from this time span to
concentrate on.
Once having selected the painting from the Lowe’s collection, pay close attention to
stylistic features (i.e., composition, color, use of light/shadow, perspective, figures, pose, gestures,
et al). Describe the object and compare/contrast it to pieces we have studied in class, whether in
the PowerPoint lectures or in the textbook. When selecting objects to compare the museum piece
to, be discerning. That is, try to find objects that share more characteristics than not. The aim of
this assignment is for students to develop an eye for style and to locate the subtle differences that
distinguish one technique or tendency from another.
Organize the paper, which should be five to seven (5-7) pages in length, into an
introductory paragraph, body, and conclusion. The introduction may include some general
information (e.g., historical, economic, cultural) about the object's specific time period, the
technique utilized to create the object, etc. More importantly, the introduction should include a
thesis statement about the object's overall aesthetic. Then organize the body in a logical, analytic
fashion, and conclude the paper with some remarks about the significance of the object -- that is,
how it fits into a larger Renaissance to Rococo art historical framework.
Remember, this is NOT a research paper; however, if you quote a source (e.g., a placard
or web site from the museum), be sure to cite it.

thorough introduction to the evolution of style and an analysis of aesthetic qualities. We

Unit 2 investigates the pan-European 17th century developments during the Baroque

thorough introduction to the evolution of style and an analysis of aesthetic qualities. We
will be concerned with the meaning of the work by focusing on cultural and historical

Unit 2 investigates the pan-European 17th century developments during the Baroque

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

To add to your project, take a virtual trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City (see your resources for a link)! Navigate their site and search for an artifact from their Early Christian/Byzantine collections. Choose an item (or items if you want to explore more than one!), and write a short essay about it. Observe its traits, identify the origin, and interpret its execution and symbolism in regards to the time’s artistic tendencies and religious trends. Illustrate your knowledge of the art by evaluating an artifact of your liking! Don't forget to add images to your PowerPoint presentation from this virtual trip and to incorporate the art from Unit 4 as well! This is due by end of day Sunday in Unit 5.
