- While Norwegian registries contain useful information, extracting causal insights may be challenging without addressing limitations in registry design and unmeasured confounders. Methodological rigor is needed to bridge the gap between observational data and interventions.

The study will link national registry data on 13,000 patients who sought treatment from 2009-2010 to information on drug diagnoses, demographics, criminal history, comorbidities, and treatment details. Patients will be followed for 4 years and compared to a similar sized control cohort. The aims are to 1) calculate hazard ratios for all-cause and cause-specific mortality for drug users versus controls and 2) investigate whether factors like age, sex, education, health issues, or treatment impact mortality risk. Insights could help prioritize high-risk patients and target beneficial treatment courses.

This data is linked to national health registers to enable longitudinal research on disease development and risk factors. Planning is underway for a fourth survey, HUNT4, to continue expanding the study's contributions to public health research.
