  1. Luke, introduce myself – ASIC, AustraliaThis afternoon I am going to provide a brief introduction to a new project in which ASIC is working with the New Zealand Companies Office. The Corporate Registers Forum provides ASIC with great opportunities to communicate and work with our international registry partners. In particular we have benefitted from a strong relationship with the New Zealand Companies Office.Australia and New Zealand have developed a long term vision of a ‘Single Economic Market’ for a seamless Australia-New Zealand business environment. This is supported by a signed agreement between the governments of both countries, with regular face-to-face consultation between ASIC and the NZCO.We have previously implemented automated data sharing arrangements for Australian Companies operating as overseas companies in New Zealand, and for New Zealand companies operating as foreign companies in Australia. This has removed some reporting obligations for these companies that operate in both Australia and New Zealand.Our current partnership project is the development of a mobile registry searching service to be available to customers via a smart phone application. Yesterday we heard from Rod Drury about the growing emergence of applications, so we see this work as critical to the way we want to engage with customers in the near future.
  2. This new, yet to be named, application will compliment our existing web search services, by offering these products in the smart phone channel increasingly favoured by our customers. The application will be available via Google Play (android) and iTunes (iOS).A customer will be able to search for information from both the NZCO and ASIC company registers, and ASIC business name register, simultaneously.In this first stage the searching will be limited to the ‘free’ search data available from the ASIC and NZCO registers.The data provided differs a little across the three registers, but includes: the name of the entity the type and status of the entity the date of registration, and address details for the entity (registered office for ASIC companies)

This new application will offer searching for our most common, and high volume, customer requests.In a calendar year there are currently … 21 million free searches of the Australian companies register 7 million free searches of the New Zealand companies register, and 8 million free searches of the Australian business names register.We estimate a first year transition of 8-12% to the mobile channel, although we would not be surprised to see a higher transition rate.
  4. The service will offer free searching of the registers, including the ability to download your search results.The default search parameter will be a search of both the Australian and New Zealand registers, but the customer will have the option to select just the one jurisdiction.For regular searchers, the application will offer a ‘favourites’ where search parameters can be saved, retrieved and re-run at a later date.
  5. On this slide we have shown two of the search result screens.The first screen shows the initial results from a search request. In this case: Two companies have been returned in the search list, one each from New Zealand and Australia. The type of entity and the number associated with that entity are shown. We have used the NZ and AU identifiers on the search outputs, and A kangaroo, for Australia, and kiwi, for New Zealand, are also used as visual aids.The second screen shows a snapshot the Australian search. The customer would get to this screen by clicking on the arrow from the previous screen.We now have a short media file to demonstrate the customer experience in using this application.
