2. Introduction
An experienced ophthalmologist specializing in performing
LASIK and other eye-related procedures to patients for more
than 20 years, Dr. Anthony Roberts is founder and chief surgeon
of Shady Grove Ophthalmology in Rockville, Maryland. In
addition to his clinical work, Dr. Anthony Roberts maintains
membership in the American Academy of Ophthalmology
(AAO).
According to a recent report highlighted in the AAO’s medical
journal, a Duke Eye Center research trial reveals the benefits of
a new imaging device that can detect symptoms of Alzheimer’s
disease quickly.
3. Alzheimer's
The noninvasive technology is known as optical coherence
tomography angiography (OCTA) and allows ophthalmologists to
observe the tiniest blood vessels in the rear portion of the eye.
Deterioration detected in these hair-sized blood vessels could echo
similar breakdowns in the brain associated with Alzheimer’s.
According to lead study author Sharon Fekrat, MD, there is a major
push to find new ways to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease in its early
stages. Current methods are invasive and screening large numbers of
patients with them isn’t feasible. Noninvasive screening using OCTA,
however, presents the opportunity to examine large patient
populations, potentially changing the entire landscape of early
Alzheimer’s detection.
