2. Introduction
• Eye is affected by spectrum of pathological
conditions occurring in all age groups from
new born to old age. Although clinical
examination and ophthalmoscopy are the basis
of diagnosis in most patients with eye disease,
in many cases, especially when the clinical
examination of the ocular fundus is difficult,
other techniques will be required, ultrasound
being one of them.

3. Aims and Objectives:
 To assess the diagnostic value of B scan
ultrasonography in evaluation of posterior segment
disorders of eye in opaque and non opaque media.
 To evaluate the role of Bscan ultrasonography in
ocular trauma and intraocular tumours.
 To correlate result of B scan ultrasonography with
clinical diagnosis
 To plan necessary management on the basis of
finding of B scan
 To assess the limitations of B scan ultrasound in
diagnosing posterior segment pathology.

4. Study Design
Study Design: Hospital based Observational
Descriptive Cross-Sectional study.
Sample Size:140 EYES
Study Period: From August 2015 to April
2016.

5. Inclusion Criteria
Patient with posterior segment pathology
Age more than 5yrs
Hazy media
Unexplained visual loss
Exclusion Criteria
All cases suspected to have isolated anterior
segment and orbital lesions.
Unstable/ poor general health condition.
Age less than 5 yrs.
Patient with high risk of or apparent extrusion of
intraocular contents.

6. Methodology
• An informed consent from all patients was
obtained. Evaluation of all cases was done on
the basis of a detailed history, questionnaire
and recorded examination including general,
slit lamp and fundus examination.
• Scanning was done with contact B-scan probe
coated with coupling gel as Transverse scan,
Longitudinal scan and Axial scan.

11. Conclusion
• B-scan ultrasound is simple, non invasive,
non-ionizing and cost effective imaging
modality to detect and helps in efficient
management of posterior segment pathologies
of eye mainly in opaque media however it is
not useful in evaluating optic disc pathology,
retinopathy and can not be done in open globe
injury.
