2. Introduction
 An accomplished surgical ophthalmologist with vast
experience in LASIK vision correction, Dr. Anthony Roberts
has been treating patients at Shady Grove Ophthalmology
in Rockville, Maryland, since 2002. Dr. Anthony Roberts is a
longtime member of the American Academy of
Ophthalmology (AAO).
In January 2019, AAO and National Medical Fellowships
(NMF) rolled out a new scholarship aimed at providing a
pathway to the medical field for minority students in
financial need.

3. AAO and NMF
 The National Medical Fellowships Scholarship in
Ophthalmology was given to two individuals in their second
year of medical school who are taking part in AAO’s Minority
Ophthalmology Mentoring project - a program designed to
help bring more individuals from minorities into the
ophthalmology field.
In its more than 70 years of existence, NMF has given more
than $40 million in scholarships to minority students seeking
careers in the medical field. Each of the two students selected
for the National Medical Fellowships Scholarship in
Ophthalmology received $5,000.
