7. Discussion
β’ BRAOs are thought to represent 38% of all
acute retinal artery obstructions.1
β’ BRAOs typically occur at vessel bifurcations
β’ 98% of the time the temporal vessels are
affected .
β’ Emboli are visible 62% of the time.2
8. β’ The visual prognosis in eyes with
symptomatic BRAO is generally good.
β’ Visual acuity usually improves to 20/40 or
better in 80% of eyes.3
β’ Significant visual recovery has been
reported up to 72 hours after the occlusive
event.
β’ Visual prognosis tends to worsen with
increasing duration of the visual symptoms.4
9. The potential benefits of paracentesis
(1)Dramatic drop in IOP
(2)Dilatation of the retinal arteries because
of the vascular tortuosity resulting from
distortion of the globe.
(3)Decreasing IOP & thus increasing retinal
perfusion pressure. 5
10. Conclusion
β’ Early intervention and paracentesis for
acute decompression of anterior chamber
prevents irreversible loss of visual acuity
due to BRAO
