The new IITs are undertaking branding exercises to differentiate themselves and attract top students. IIT Gandhinagar allows students freedom without policing or tracking attendance. IIT Indore revamped its curriculum to allow more research time. IITs are also partnering with overseas universities, tapping retired professors, and recruiting international faculty to strengthen programs. The new IITs aim to establish strong brands and research opportunities to compete among the network of 18 IITs.
