New Economy
Working in the new
1. What is New Economy?
• The New Economy refers to the convergence of
manufacturing, services and technologies to produce high
value-added, technology-enabled, and adaptable
industries.
• New Economy is a buzzword describing new, high growth
industries that are one the cutting edge of technology and
are the driving force of economic growth.
Old Economy New Economy
Inexpensive place to do business
was the key.
Being rich in talent and
ideas is the key.
Attracting companies was key. Attracting educated
people is key.
People followed jobs
Connection to emerging global
opportunities is critical.
Connection to global
opportunities was not
essential.
Fossil fuel
dependent manufacturing.
Communications
dependent but energy smart.
Talented, well-educated
people choose location
first, then look for a job.
2. How Does New Economy Work?
• Industry trends have always adapted to changes in technologies,
incorporating and often initiating changes to improve productivity,
quality, and profitability.
• With the rapid growth of communications technologies from the mid
1980s, companies have been able to adapt even faster.
• An important component of the new economy is the global span of many
business processes and linking value chains (i.e. designers, suppliers,
producers, marketers, distributors, and customers) together using
communication and management technologies.
• Since companies have been focusing on their core
competencies and using these new communication tools,
organizations have been able to outsource efficiently and
improve their profitability.
• The evolution of industry with the integration of new
technologies is certainly not new.
• Agricultural producers introduced new technologies and
changed dramatically how food is produced.
• Traditional manufacturing gave way to advanced manufacturing,
integrating continuous quality improvement goals with a skilled workforce
and the latest production technologies to produce higher quality and lower
marginal costs.
• More recently, business services are giving way to technology-enabled
services, integrating communication and management technologies, skilled
workers (wherever they are found), and scalable business models to
produce high value-added services when and where they are needed.
3. Why Does New Economy Matter?
• The current waves of industry phenomena, from the computer
industry (e.g. PCs, PDA, and software)
• The Internet industries (e.g. dot-coms), and the technology-
enabled services (e.g. online market places, communication, and
customer relationship management (CRM) and virtual
workplaces), are all elements of the new economy as we become a
global marketplace.
•WHERE THE JOBS
WILL BE
Careers of the Future: 10 New Jobs
Ten Jobs Likely to Step into the Future
• 1. Digital currency planner
• The European Central Bank defines digital currency as “a
type of unregulated, digital money, which is issued and
usually controlled by its developers, and used and accepted
among the members of a specific virtual community.”
• As a digital currency planner, you’d be advising clients about
the complexities of crypto currencies to help them manage
their virtual financial portfolio.
• 2. Garbage designer
• In 2008, Disney trekked into the not-so-distant future by
making the movie Wall-E, a robot character that collects
Earth’s debris and forms it into useful structures. Instead of
burying our waste will we be able to take recycling and reusing
to this level?
• 4. Digital detox therapist
• People will periodically need to “unload their digital baggage”
to help them achieve more balance in their everyday life; so
digital rehabs would most likely be their place to go and a new
type of therapist will be required.
• 3. Space tour guide
• With space agencies such as NASA and ESA going relentless
about space explorations, as well as more and more people
expressing interest in space tours, a space tour guide job
shouldn’t be far behind.
• 5. Urban shepherd
• Going green is a growing trend in urban development industries.
Thus, urban shepherds will be in demand as well. They will be
taking care of modern infrastructures such as vertical gardens or
open spaces.
• 6. Backlash minimizer
• The person in this job will shoot down resistance to new ideas in
technology. He or she will also be in charge of overseeing damage
control for people who use too much technology at their own risk.
• 7. Avatar relationship manager
• Our relationship with The Internet of Things needs some
management too. People will need someone who’ll teach them
to use technology to empower, not enslave, them.
• 8. Crowdfunding specialist
• Crowdfunding specialists are experts in helping startups launch
their campaigns on crowdfunding platforms such as IndieGoGo
and Kickstarter. Without these experts, products or services in
the pipeline might not get the green light.
• 9. Corporate disorganizer
• As the saying goes, “you can’t please everybody.” Some companies shun
technology as much as they can, choosing to limit their interaction with the modern
world. Someone who works in this position will shake things up in business
environments that have gone stagnant.
• 10. End-of-life planner
• If everything in life today is taking a major turn, so will end-of-life. Critically ill
patients may turn to euthanasia advisers to help them exit life as gracefully as
possible. We may even see businesses springing up to offer once-in-a-lifetime
arrangements for wakes or burials. Or maybe after-death services for the grieving
family.
• An Australian funeral company has already rebranded funerals as ‘leaving
parties’ so seriously, who knows?
Whether we like it or not, the path to employment is marked by these
possibilities. For companies, hiring the right people to do jobs in the
future is the first crucial step.
• And with the rate that technological innovations are shaping up, we’ll be
seeing jobs either modified or introduced on whole new levels.
When posting a job, recruiters would do well to attract and encourage
potential employees to grow with them in such a great technological
revolution.
Thank
you
