DUTIES
1. Day to day supervision of spiritual care of patients, family, staff and volunteers
on the in‐patient unit and day hospice/Hospital regardless of faith or life stance.
2. Giving appropriate, effective and safe advice to health and social care
professionals, as part of multi‐disciplinary team, on how to manage a complex
patient or family with spiritual care needs.

3. Developing a coherent approach to the delivery of spiritual care across the whole
family of services within the organization working with the Teaching Hospitals
spiritual care champions, chaplaincy volunteers and the clinical team.
4. Participate in delivery of teaching as appropriate to all levels of staff including
Palliative Medicine, medical students and other undergraduates.
5. Ensuring appropriate services and spaces for reflection for patients, families and
staff.
6. To facilitate the provision of appropriate worship and religious expression
reflecting the faith groups represented in the Hospital/Hospice and in response to
individual need.
OVERALL PURPOSE:
1) To ensure that the spiritual needs of patients, visitors and staff are met effectively
to the highest standard of care.
2) To work alongside the Medical Director to oversee the provision of spiritual care
and participate in service development and research projects.
3) To actively contribute to the clinical management plan of patients across the
family of services that makes up Muheza Hospice Care/St.Augastines’ Hospital.
4) To work cooperatively as part of the whole family of services.
MAIN DUTIES OF POST
1) To be a core member of the specialist palliative care team for the organization
providing and overseeing the provision of spiritual care for patients, families,
staff and volunteers.

2) Provide an informed ethical theological, spiritual and pastoral resource.
3) Facilitate the provision of inclusive worship and religious expression.
4) To ensure the hospice/Hospital chaplaincy service meets the Standards for
Hospice and Palliative Care Chaplaincy.
5) Create a network of faith leaders to support the work of the spiritual care co-
ordinator and spiritual care champions.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES.
I. To comply with all policies and procedures of the hospice/Hospital in all areas
but especially around clinical and health and safety issues. To oversee that
medical staff are aware of their duties of compliance and facilitate their
attendance at mandatory training Sessions as needed.
II. To raise concerns around any aspect of hospice/hospital activity with an
appropriate member of staff as per St.Augastines’ and Tanzanian Government
health policies and procedures. To promote at all times the Hospice Philosophy
and uphold the St.Augastines’ core values.
III. To be a co‐operative and supportive member of the St.Augastines’ staff team,
ensuring that all members are aware of any issues in the post holder’s workload,
which may affect other members of the St.Augastines’ team.
IV. Provide additional support as needed to students on placement with and visitors
to the organization whilst on the Hospice site.
V. To participate in teaching both undergraduates and postgraduates from a broad
range of professions who have a placement at the hospice/hospital. To support
the delivery of spiritual care training to hospice and Hospital staff.

PROFESSIONAL FUNCTION.
a) To maintain training and knowledge about safeguarding issues for children and
adults and to support other staff in acting appropriately if safeguarding issues
are raised.
b) To ensure all spiritual care activity undertaken by the clinical team is
appropriate and evidence based, and within the competence of the staff
performing it.
c) To comply with Government guidance and standards for the Hospice and
Palliative Care Chaplaincy. To alert the Medical Director if you have concerns
that those standards are not being met, regardless of the reason for this.
d) To participate in annual appraisal and continuing ministerial development.
MANAGEMENT.
i. To manage and priorities time effectively to ensure patient care is delivered in a
timely manner by the staff working in the Hospice/Hospital.
ii. To keep ongoing record of all training and teaching as well as all palliative care
training courses attended..
