The common energy market for the GCC states planned to be operational within five years will save member states tens of millions annually in operational costs. It will allow optimal use of energy sources and conserve fossil fuels. A GCC-wide electricity market will soon launch to increase economic benefits through power trading. Establishing the GCC power grid has avoided over 1,100 power cuts across six member nations by providing backup power. Eventually the plan is to connect this trade network to international energy markets.
The CEO of DEWA and the President of General Electric Gulf discussed developments in energy transformation and renewable energy. They reviewed DEWA's current and ongoing projects and discussed efforts to develop new technologies. The President of GE Gulf outlined solutions and techniques offered by GE for renewable energy, technology, and investments.

The value of contracts awarded to local Emirati companies for the Barakah nuclear power plant project in the UAE has reached $11 billion, more than double the value from a year ago. The project is on track and will provide about 25% of the UAE's electricity needs once complete. Qatar will reduce its condensate exports by 10 shipments per month starting in January 2017 as a new splitter at its Ras Laffan refinery comes online, allowing it to process more condensate domestically. US shale oil output is expected to decline for the seventh consecutive month in July due to continued low oil prices, while natural gas production is forecast to fall for a fifth month.

The UAE is nearing completion of the Barakah nuclear power plant, with the first reactor 96% finished. The plant is expected to provide around 25% of the country's electricity once fully operational in 2020. It will also enhance energy security for decades to come by providing a reliable, clean source of power. Bahrain has hired an engineering firm to help develop solar power policies and regulations to support renewable energy integration as it works to boost sustainable energy. The UAE has also purchased its first shipment of condensate oil from the US to replace supplies cut off from Qatar due to the ongoing diplomatic dispute.
ADCO and ESNAAD, subsidiaries of ADNOC, signed a memorandum of cooperation to provide well stimulation services for ADCO's oil fields. ESNAAD will provide new coiled tubing and stimulation packages and related services. The agreement aims to support ADCO's oil field expansion efforts. Separately, Lamprell won a $365 million contract from the National Drilling Company to construct two jack-up rigs for offshore drilling in the UAE. The rigs are expected to be delivered in 2016 and 2017. Saudi Arabia plans to double its natural gas production by 2030 to meet domestic demand but has no plans for gas exports.

Masdar will fund Oman's first wind power plant, which is expected to begin operations in May 2017. The $200 million project will be located in Harweel and have a capacity of 50MW, making it the first wind power project in Oman and the GCC. Drydocks World won a contract to build the BorWin3 offshore wind converter platform for transmission of electricity from German offshore wind farms. A Russian energy ministry delegation will meet with UAE officials to discuss potential energy deals, including oil concessions for Rosneft in the UAE and gas supply agreements with Gazprom.
Access Infra Africa, a Dubai-based company, will launch a 10-megawatt solar power plant in Uganda later this year, which will be the largest privately-owned solar plant in Africa. The company plans to invest $500 million over the next three years in power projects across 17 African countries, focusing on renewable energy such as solar and wind power. About 620 million people in sub-Saharan Africa currently lack access to electricity. Access Infra Africa's portfolio is expected to generate nearly 1 gigawatt of electricity by 2018, enough for 700,000 homes.

The oil and gas sector plays a key role in Oman's economy, accounting for about half of GDP, and will need to help address challenges of creating value, supporting SMEs, and fostering innovation and human resources
Yanbu Aramco Sinopec Refining Co (Yasref) has started trial runs at its new 400,000-barrel-per-day refinery in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia, a joint venture between Saudi Aramco and Sinopec. The refinery will process Arab Heavy crude and produce gasoline, diesel, and other products. Initial exports of some products like naphtha are expected in late October as operations are stabilized. The startup of this large new refinery could exacerbate the current global oil supply glut and further decrease margins for European and Asian refiners. DNO, an oil and gas operator, has received a two-year extension for its production sharing agreement for the frontier exploration

A Infrared hyperspectral imaging technique for non-invasive cancer detection.IJERD Editor
Hyperspectral imaging(HI) is an emerging technology in the field of biomedical engineering which may be used as a non-invasive modality for cancer characterization. In this project, we propose to investigate hyperspectral imaging for the characterization of gastric cancer. The hyperspectral imaging has been used for the detection of various kinds of human cancer; breast, gastric, prostate and tongue. A research group has also investigated the use of reflectance imaging to detect canine cancer using fluorescent dyes. The use of hyperspectral imaging, however, has been limited for the characterization of cancer. In this project, we have already acquired many hyperspectral images of tumors. The malignant tissue has relatively low reflectance intensity compared to the benign tissue. The decreased reflectance intensity observed for malignant tumors is due to the increased microvasculature and therefore higher blood content of cancerous tissue relative to benign tissue. In the future, we will normalize and preprocess the spectral dataset. We propose to apply various algorithms such as Support Vector Machine, Linear Discriminant Analysis and Principal Component Analysis on the spectral data to discern the malignant and benign tumors. The advantage of cancer detection using hyperspectral imaging is that it is non-invasive, highly efficient and less time consuming than traditional methods like biopsy.
Shell produces transformer oils based on gas-to-liquids (GTL) technology that can help enhance transformer reliability. GTL-based oils have higher flash points, lower densities, and better thermal properties than conventional mineral oils. They are essentially free of sulphur and have very low aromatic and unsaturated contents. This reduces the risk of oil-related copper corrosion and gives the oils superior resistance to degradation, oxidative stability, and miscibility characteristics compared to conventional oils. Testing at the University of Manchester found GTL-based oils withstood higher voltages during lightning impulse breakdown tests, indicating greater resilience to voltage transients. Shell believes its GTL oils can help increase transformer lifespans and reliability.
ExxonMobil did not bid to renew its concession for Abu Dhabi's historic onshore oilfields, which were responsible for half of the emirate's oil production. Exxon placed a conditional bid requiring it be sole operator of part of the fields, but was reportedly the only major partner not to bid. Gulf states have provided Egypt with $6 billion worth of free fuel to help address high subsidy costs and potential unrest. Siemens plans to make a formal offer for parts of France's Alstom after the company accepted a $16.9 billion bid from GE for its energy unit, in a deal that will be closely watched for German CEO Joe Kaeser's first major acquisition.

Jade A Global Witness investigation into Myanmar's "Big State Secret"MYO AUNG Myanmar
The most valuable jade in the world is found in the Kachin hills of northern Myanmar.
This 12 month investigation reveals it is worth far more than previously thought - up to US$31 billion in 2014 alone. That is equivalent to nearly half the GDP of the whole country, which badly needs it. But hardly any of the money is reaching ordinary people or state coffers.
Instead, the trade is controlled by the military elites, US sanctioned drug lords and crony companies that the country's rebranded government says it is consigning to the past. These networks cream off vast profits while local people suffer terrible abuses and see their natural inheritance ripped out from beneath their feet. These injustices are stoking unrest in an already unstable and volatile region.

"Does Foreign Direct Investment Negatively Affect Preservation of Culture in the Global South? Case Studies in Thailand and Cambodia."
Do elements of globalization, such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), negatively affect the ability of countries in the Global South to preserve their culture? This research aims to answer this question by employing a cross-sectional comparative case study analysis utilizing methods of difference. Thailand and Cambodia are compared as they are in the same region and have a similar culture. The metric of difference between Thailand and Cambodia is their ability to preserve their culture. This ability is operationalized by their respective attitudes towards FDI; Thailand imposes stringent regulations and limitations on FDI while Cambodia does not hesitate to accept most FDI and imposes fewer limitations. The evidence from this study suggests that FDI from globally influential countries with high gross domestic products (GDPs) (e.g. China, U.S.) challenges the ability of countries with lower GDPs (e.g. Cambodia) to protect their culture. Furthermore, the ability, or lack thereof, of the receiving countries to protect their culture is amplified by the existence and implementation of restrictive FDI policies imposed by their governments.
My study abroad in Bali, Indonesia, inspired this research topic as I noticed how globalization is changing the culture of its people. I learned their language and way of life which helped me understand the beauty and importance of cultural preservation. I believe we could all benefit from learning new perspectives as they could help us ideate solutions to contemporary issues and empathize with others.

In a tight labour market, job-seekers gain bargaining power and leverage it into greater job quality—at least, that’s the conventional wisdom.
Michael, LMIC Economist, presented findings that reveal a weakened relationship between labour market tightness and job quality indicators following the pandemic. Labour market tightness coincided with growth in real wages for only a portion of workers: those in low-wage jobs requiring little education. Several factors—including labour market composition, worker and employer behaviour, and labour market practices—have contributed to the absence of worker benefits. These will be investigated further in future work.
