What is a network map? What can it tell us? Why is it valuable? These are hypothetical examples that pair network mapping, analysis, and suggested interventions for strengthening a network.
Network mapping inherently illuminates power.
Network mapping and/or analysis inherently seeks to bring to light several kinds of power. Here are several ways it can include power:
* Demonstrates where capacity and resources exist in a group of entities * Visualizes previously invisible patterns, structures, and dynamics that existed but of which we were unaware * Elucidates relationships and pathways for exchange; help understand how things flow through a set of entities (and where they don't flow) * Surfaces gaps like who's not being represented by providing an overview of a set of entities * Supports an understanding of these things as they change over time so we can reflect transparently (rather than anecdotally) on improvements or regression

Context awareness in the travel companion of the shift2 rail initiativePolitecnico di Milano
Providing personalized offers, and services in general, for the users of a system requires perceiving the context in which the users' preferences are rooted. In this work, we introduce the use of an already known model and methodology-based on the so-called Context Dimension Tree-along with a conceptual architecture to build a recommender system that offers personalized services for travelers. The research is performed in the frame of the Shift2Rail initiative as part of the Innovation Programme 4 of EU Horizon 2020.

- Social network analysis uses social graph constructs to understand user behavior, recommendations, and influence. A social graph models relationships between connected social objects like people, interests, and actions. Characteristics of social graphs include strong and weak ties, centrality, degree, betweenness, and closeness. Social graphs can be used for recommendation engines, interest graphs, influence networks, sentiment analysis, and searching, scoring, and ranking. The use of social graphs in marketing is still nascent but will change how marketing is done in the future.
This document summarizes a report on effective technology inclusion interventions. It includes chapters on different community initiatives like community media centers, neighborhood ICT centers, and public WiFi. The key findings are that volunteers are very important but need better support, organizations should collaborate by seeking each other out, there is untapped knowledge around community organizations, technology can help organizations as well as communities, organizations represent communities but need to better listen to them, and the social and financial value provided by organizations needs more recognition. The document provides recommendations for digital media centers, such as using social media, writing project summaries, sharing them online, connecting with other relevant organizations, and charging for services when appropriate.

This document discusses community management for music fans. It outlines how artists and fans originally interacted, and how platforms and online communities now facilitate their connection. Effective community management focuses on understanding the community, using conversation to build loyalty, and accepting diversity. Having a strong community provides business benefits like a captive market and reduced costs. Sample communities like Grateful Dead fans and Endah N Rhesa's "earfriends" showcase how social media can nurture fan loyalty when artists actively engage with fans and give them a sense of participation. Experiments that reduce the gap between artists and fans, such as documenting song creation or crowdsourcing ideas, seem to strengthen loyalty. The goal of community management is to mutually pursue interests and maintain close
Beth Kanter presented on leading organizations on social media platforms. She began with examples from foundations on their social media use, such as the Philadelphia Foundation using Facebook for donor cultivation. Kanter discussed assessing social media maturity on a "crawl-walk-run-fly" scale and having a networked mindset. She covered practical skills like network mapping and using social media for professional development. Kanter also emphasized the importance of having a social media strategy with metrics and learning from small pilots and failures. The key is taking incremental steps forward while integrating a social culture across the organization.
On Tuesday 26th November 2013 in the heart of Birmingham ProgM SIG staged “Delivering more 4 less: using programme management to achieve transformational change in times of austerity." The SIG had promised an event that weaved together the four ‘C’s’ theme namely collaboration, change, community and competence, drawing on a wealth of experience from across the public sector. http://bit.ly/progmm4l
Merv Wyeth, ProgM Chair introduced the conference by describing how the event had been designed with the intention of providing delegates with a high return on their personal investment – i.e attendance and participation #eventroi. The big idea was that the day should be an enjoyable shared experience that offered an exceptional opportunity for learning, motivation and networking in the field of programme management.
Time and space was built into the programme to enable the audience to interrogate (police were present), and otherwise question, speakers. They were also given the opportunity to vote in polls on issues and questions that speakers posed, which offered additional insights into audience perception and sentiment which otherwise would not have been available.
The conference offered the chance for Jim Dale to provide a ‘sitrep’ on his ProgM-backed
Collaborative Change research namely “Using research to improve the delivery and effectiveness of change programmes and projects” previewed in last month’s show-case webinar. During his presentation Jim provided an update of the story so far, thanked those who had already participated either in an interview or by completing the survey. ProgM would like to extend the opportunity to all those currently, or previously, involved in programme management and related collaborative activity to participate in this important Collaborative Change survey.
On the day, Steve Wake, newly appointed Chair of APM Board, was available to round-up the proceedings and provide a special vote of thanks to his Board colleagues, the organising committee and our generous sponsors, BMT Hi-Q Sigma. He reminded those present of the ongoing Strategy 2020 initiative of “Listening, learning and leading” that complements events of this type.
One delegate (Neil White) wrote “A constant theme, running like a golden thread throughout the day, was that effective programme management is a necessary and complimentary bedfellow of collaboration, and an important ingredient in delivering successful transformational change.
Whereas projects are essentially objective and enable the effective development and delivery of ‘products’ (some of which are can be very big products!) it was recognised that programmes are much more subjective and must be sensitive to the environment in which they are operate.
Rather than see them as obstacles, programme managers must respect and be prepared to exploit the systems and organisations surrounding them to their mutual benefit.

The document summarizes a workshop on becoming a networked nonprofit. The workshop covered understanding where organizations are at in their digital maturity, developing a networked mindset, understanding and mapping networks, and identifying small action steps organizations can take to progress. Attendees participated in exercises like mapping their organizational networks and reflecting on their capacity to implement social media strategies incrementally. The goal was to provide ideas for organizations to take a step towards becoming more networked through open discussion and learning activities.
This document discusses smart cities and empowering citizens through open data and technology. It presents the principles of co-creation and making to help citizens understand and act in the world. Examples are given of how the CitySDK and Smart Citizen Kit can help cities share and reuse solutions by collecting, annotating, linking and distributing open city data in a standardized way. Guidelines are provided for smarter city design that engages citizens and favors interoperability through loosely coupled, reusable systems.

Catherine's session at LGComms Academy 2014 was entitled: Beyond communications engagement through to democracy, where she tackled some really interesting, challenging territory for public-sector communicators.
In particular, Catherine pointed out why a networked, digital society demands not better communications but better democracy – and argued why this is an essential battleground for public-sector communicators in the future.
Day 3 mapping, resource, community & stakeholdersZohaib Amjad
Mapping involves identifying community assets and resources to support organizational goals. It requires collaborating to collect and analyze data on assets, stakeholders, and resources. This helps identify strengths and gaps to develop strategies, build partnerships, and empower communities. Regular communication during the mapping process is important to design and implement effective action plans.
1) The document examines the online engagement of community councils (CCs) in the UK through the lens of communities of practice.
2) It finds that most CCs have little to no online presence, and those that do are often out of date or inactive. Only a small minority provide up-to-date information to support citizen engagement.
3) Applying a communities of practice framework reveals that most CCs operate independently with few horizontal links between members, more resembling isolated "knowledge silos" than a self-organized learning network. The project aims to better understand barriers to online collaboration between CCs.

What is a network map? What can it tell us? Why is it valuable?
Prepared by Ari Sahagún

2. Network map: issue clusters
• This example network map
represents clusters of NGOs
working on similar issues,
each color = a different issue
• Map visualization based off
of data collected in surveys
• Some examples of
interventions follow
3. Strategic communication
• Notice the isolation of
each of the clusters (hub
and spoke patterns)
• Ex. all communication to
the blue cluster must pass
through this blue hub
• Recommendation:
intentionally increase
communication between
clusters
4. Highlight champions
• Notice that some NGOs
are in bridging positions:
they connect clusters
• Recommendation: bring
these groups together and
provide trainings on how
to distribute
communication and work
to the rest of their peers
5. Gaps and underrepresentation
• Few orange and pink
NGOs present
• Is this intentional,
desirable?
• Network map and data
can suggest strategic
interventions
