Nella Larsen was an African American novelist and librarian of the Harlem Renaissance era. She is known for her novels Passing and Quicksand which explored themes of racial ambiguity and identity. Larsen had a brief but influential literary career that was impacted by accusations of plagiarism in her third novel Sanctuary. She lived a complex life as a mixed-race woman who was light-skinned enough to pass for white.

Robert Hayden carries his experiences through his poems. Three of his poems that show these experiences are, "Middle Passage", "Homage to the Empress of the Blues." And "Those Winter Sundays." Hayden talks about what it was like first hand on a ship as a slave. He talks about how the men around him went crazy. He says," That there were hardly room 'tween-decks for half the sweltering cattle stowed spoon-fashioned there; that some went mad of thirst and tore their flesh and successful the blood." (Hayden, R. 2013/1962 p. 2372). He also talked about what it was like being on the "voyage of death". The way Hayden words his poems are powerful, it really give you a detailed mental image. "A charnel stench, effluvium of living death, spreads outwards from the hold, where the living and the dead, the horribly dying, lie interlocked, lie foul with blood and excrement." (Hayden, R. 2013/1962 p.2375). In his poem, "Homage to the empress of the Blues", he is comparing his pain and suffering to a dance. "Because Grey laths began somewhere to show from underneath torn hurdygurdy lithographs of doll faced heavens..." (Hayden, R. 2013/1962 p.2377). As for the poem, "Those Winter Sundays", he reflects on the Sunday mornings when he was younger. The poem showed what has been lost in African-American experience. The poem started out as a pleasant memory but quickly turned sour. The father worked hard for his family but felt like everyone was ungrateful. "Speaking in differently to him, who had driven out the cold and polished my good shoes as well..." (Hayden, R. 2013/1962 p. 2377.)

Art Spiegelman shows how deep and delicate his work is which in all we expect from his long established novels and as well as his expanded nonfictional text in his novel “Maus”. In Spiegelman story “Maus” he illustrates the true events throughout the story. The graphic novel “Maus” is a exceptional nonfiction work about the history on Jews. Maus is a story about a Jewish woman and man in Germany from the start of the Holocaust. Both the woman and man are trying there best to stay away from any harmful situations and to not to be seen or confronted by anyone they may know. The couple, the man and woman s ...

EVELYN WAUGH NEWSLETTER AND STUD
Latin America: Ignorance and Irony in The Loved One
by 0800006408
Aimée Thanatogenos “spoke the tongue of Los Angeles” (134), but not the tongue of the angels. That is the
crux of The Loved One (1948), Evelyn Waugh’s satiric novella of American funerary customs. “With a name
like that” (148), she is doomed from the beginning: she is the “death-spawned loved one,” but she is deaf to the
European tongues in which her doom is pronounced. European names occur constantly in the novella—
Heinkel, Bogolov, Medici—but those who bear them are cut off from their ancestral roots, “waifs and
strays” (87-88) in a land of the lowest common denominator:
“I’ve just found a Mr. Medici in my office.”
“Why, yes, Frank. Only he says it ‘Medissy,’ like that; how you said it kinda sounds like a wop
…” (30)
Like a knowledge of Italian pronunciation, Catholicism is not a common denominator, and its angelic
tongue, Latin, is meaningless in the ears of good Americans. A grieving Mrs. Theodora Heinkel rings Dennis
Barlow, the novella’s cynical British anti-hero, to arrange the funeral of her pet Sealyham. Her address is “207
Via Dolorosa” (17), on a street named for the “sorrowful way” Christ trod to crucifixion. Mrs. Heinkel grieves
for her dog but not for her God, and she is deaf to the blasphemy of the white dove that will be released to
symbolize her Sealyham’s soul “at the moment of committal” (21; cf. Matthew 3:16; Mark 1:10; Luke 3:22;
John 1:32). When Dennis collects the dog’s cadaver, he has to translate Latin into English for Mr. Heinkel:
“I have our brochure here setting out our service. Were you thinking of interment or incineration?
“Pardon me?”
“Buried or burned?”
“Burned, I guess.” (20)
A little later, arranging the funeral of his self-strangulated mentor at Whispering Glades, the model for his
pets’ cemetery, Dennis talks with a “Mortuary Hostess” to the strains of the “Hindu Love Song”:
“Can I help you in any way?”
“I came to arrange about a funeral.”
“Is it for yourself?”
“Certainly not. Do I look so moribund?”
“Pardon me?”
“Do I look as if I were about to die?” (42)
He has already heard a Mrs. Bogolov—Bog is the Russian word for “God”—being informed that Wilbur
Kenworthy, the fatuous “Dreamer” of Whispering Glades, “does not approve of wreaths or crosses” (41).
Whispering Glades is an attempt to deny the dirt, ugliness and pain that accompany death. The cross is a
supreme symbol of death’s horror for materialists like Kenworthy, who refuse to accept its true significance.
Hence the ironic double entendre of a parenthesis in chapter five: “After consultation the Cricket Club’s fine
trophy in the shape of cross bats and wickets had been admitted. Dr. Kenworthy had himself given judgement;
the trophy was essentially a reminder of life not of death; that was the crux” (73). A crux is literally a cr ...

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Editor's Notes
Father was a black cook from the West Indies, Mother a Danish seamstress. Larsen’s father disappeared soon after she was born and mother remarried a white man named Peter Larsen. Thought that these two men were actually the same man, he just wanted to reinvent himself as white (no records of name change though). Younger sister comes along, Larsen sticks out of the dynamically white family, she claims Peter was ashamed of her (for being african american).
Her enrollment in a prestigious African American school served to provided distance between her and her family (she was made to feel shame in regards to being out in public with them) She said her racially ethnicity “might make it awkward for them, particularly my half-sister”. She wanted to learn about her Danish Ancestory, refused to acknowledge her, also said she went to attend college but no documentary evidence support her claim. Elmer Imes was the second african american to earn a PH.D in Physics. This marriage opened doors for Larsen – became acquianted with intellectuals of Harlem Renaissance (Du Bois, Langston Hughes, and Walter White)
Her husband and she, were socialist in Harlem and in white intellectual circles but on her free time devoted herself to literature and reading. She had devoted herself full time to her literary career after publishing “Correspondence”.
Quicksand-struggles about being mixed races in America. Include themes of gender and sexuality. Believed to be aoutobiography, main character born to a danish mother and black father. Travels (chicago family shunned her, tuskagee, copenhagan, harlem)“Passing” solidified her status as a literary voice. Worked on third novel and traveled to spain and paris for the next six months.
Publishers of Kaye-Smith story disagreed stating Larsen’s work as being wholly original. Critics say “Sanctuary” was longer, better written, and more explicitly political. Defended her story/Folklore/previous rough drafts. Imes had an affair with a white woman. She lived off Imes alimony payments till his death in 1941. Died alone in apartment. Body was discovered some time after that, at which point most of her belongings were missing. Considered by most critics to be the greatest novelist of the Harlem Rennaissance.
