Neil Armstrong was born in 1930 in Wapakoneta, Ohio and became interested in airplanes from a young age. He later became a naval aviator and test pilot, joining NASA in 1955. In 1969, Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon as commander of the Apollo 11 mission, retiring from NASA in 1971 but continuing his work supporting the space program.
