Digital Forsyth is a collaboration between cultural heritage institutions in Forsyth County, North Carolina to provide open access to over 15,000 digitized historical photographs. The collaboration includes Winston Salem State University, Forsyth County Public Library, and Wake Forest University. Digital Forsyth's mission is to increase public access to and knowledge of the county's cultural and scientific heritage through digitization. The vision is for Digital Forsyth to become the definitive online repository of cultural resources from Forsyth County institutions.

Why Libraries Virtualize
1) Libraries are increasingly adopting cloud computing to reduce costs, improve scalability and services, and focus resources on strategic priorities rather than technical infrastructure.
2) Cloud computing offers libraries opportunities to improve resources and services through efficiency gains, but also poses challenges regarding network complexity, sustainability, security and contingency planning.
3) For libraries to fully benefit from cloud computing, they need expertise in technical, legal and operational issues; the ability to experiment and identify appropriate services; and support from administrators to explore new IT models and their impacts.

Integrated Library Services: Federating Access to Resources and Services discusses how openURL link resolvers can serve as an interface to more complex library service and resource requests by enabling connectivity between databases and resources in a metadata-rich way. It proposes a framework for interpreting user requests, authenticating users, determining service requirements, proxying service requests, consolidating responses, and transforming outputs to provide cross-application access to library resources and services based on common standards like openURL, NCIP, and Z39.50. This framework aims to meet users' needs at the "point of need" rather than the traditional "point of service" approach of integrated library systems.

This study examines the role cultural heritage professionals envision for their institutions’ digital presence, finding that far from being secondary to the physical institutions they represent, cultural heritage websites are experiences in and of themselves. Through digital-only resources and experiences, cultural heritage institutions are making possible a “visit” not replicable in the physical museum. Many galleries, libraries, archives, and museums are attempting to engage online visitors in a variety of ways, creating opportunities for user participation and personalization of their experience. In addition, because of their roles in managing, disseminating, and curating information, cultural heritage professionals are in the position through these online visits to influence the collective memory of society. What opportunities are cultural heritage professionals creating on these sites, and how are visitors engaging with them? This study presents the results of exploratory interviews with cultural heritage professionals about their expectations for user participation and how they envision their institutions’ digital presence. It includes a discussion of the implications for shaping the collective memory of society and directions for future research.

Cherise Inclusion Presentation

This document outlines efforts to envision the future of information education and prepare students. It discusses gathering input on needed skills like critical thinking and flexibility. It describes the Beyond the Stacks podcast promoting diverse careers. It also discusses building bridges across fields through collaborations like an artist-in-residence program. Pilot projects are proposed on a teaching library model and virtual field experiences to help faculty and students adapt to future changes. The overall goal is helping information professionals lead innovative changes.
Digital Forsyth: An NCECHO Collaborative Multi-year Digitization Project
Through digitization, Digital Forsyth facilitates access to cultural, historical and scientific heritage photograph collections from Forsyth County institutions. It began as a 2004 brainstorming meeting between three Forsyth County libraries to improve services and increase interlibrary collaboration. After receiving planning and implementation grants, the collaboration digitized photographs while establishing best practices for governance, production workflows, and communication between partners. The website went public in 2007 and hopes to expand access and add educational components in future years.

Projects include efforts to collect oral histories and music memorabilia from community members, partnerships with local artists to reimagine digitized special collections, text mining of historical newspapers, managing Indigenous digital collections in culturally responsive ways, centralized digitization training and support for public libraries, and building LIS students’ skills in digital stewardship through hands-on fieldwork at small libraries, archives and museums around the state.
