This document summarizes research on retention of Canadian college students. It finds that retention rates differ by credential type, with university transfer students having the highest retention and upgrading/non-parchment students having the lowest. Grade point average and full-time enrollment are consistently the strongest predictors of retention. However, some factors vary by credential, for example hours spent working predicts retention for university transfer students but not others. The research concludes that factors affecting retention are largely within an institution's control, and institutions can use the results to develop retention strategies tailored for different student groups.
